Your Blog Roll as Your Home Page

I was thinking recently. And I am happy to report that I got through it without much significant damage. But then again, no pain, no gain, right?

We are using keywords on a targeted post, and that is how people are finding us. They do a google search and choose a website that appeals to them, and they wind up on that very post that we have targeted with those keywords.

They then have the choice to navigate around on our site. They are not necessarily landing on the home page which is our blog roll. They are landing on a post within the home page.

So here is my question:

Why not have a static home page that informs your visitors about your site with the six essential blog design elements that the best home pages include, and let your blog be a menu item? http://www.bloggersidekick.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-effective-blog-design/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Blog%20Design%20Guide

I am seeing a lot of reasons for having a dedicated static home page with your sites main information that I am loosing site of the blog roll for being the home page.

Because I am building an authority site where I will be forever adding blog posts, I use a blogroll because it will give better rankings for the website overall. This is because Google likes to see fresh content and with a blogroll on your home page, everytime you add a new blog the home page gets updated and reindexed, thus boosting the rank.

Google also loves internal links which are also great for SEO. Everytime you add another blog to your home page blogroll you are adding an internal link. Again his helps to boost rank. You will not get any of these benefits with a static home page.

A static home page is best for small websites where doing blogs will not be an ongoing thing and are more of a trivial thing. A static home page is also good for eCommerce sites. But if you intend to be an authority site which most do through blogging, a blogroll is the way to go for better SEO. There is a reason why WordPress made the blogroll the default setting.

Very Good.
Now that is the type of information that solidifies my decision making.

Thanks you very much for a great explanation for keeping a blog roll as your home page.

You are welcome.

Perfect explanation my friend.

Josh

Thank you, that was crystal clear :)

Thanks for that answer you gave. I wasn't understanding the benefits of a blog-roll on the home page. I am just sstting up a site, and I temporarily set up a static home page, but then I changed it back. Thanks a lot

You are welcome.

Thanks for the information, and resource.

The theme I use for a couple of sites lets me have information about my site as well as being a blog roll. I use posts with categories on the menu to keep things neat. :)

Food for thought, i also swing between those two ideas.

Hi Jim

As it happens my home page is not my blog roll but that's another story...it's always reviewable!!

Thanks for the link to bloggersidekick, I'll be reading that thoroughly to get more insight into what makes a great homepage.

Thanks again
Mark

Thanks Mark,
It is a very good read with a lot of food for thought.

Will look forward to it then.

Greetings Jim!

I've done the static page on my sites, together with a blog roll as a menu item on some sites. I tend to be a page man though - but use a plugin or two to let me use categories and tags with the pages, allow comments on the pages, etc.

Best of luck in your efforts!

Dennis

I am starting to think that it may be a better way to go. And it does keep things neater.
