Overcoming Adversity with Positivity and Finding a New Family: My Story of Turning My Life Around Th

My journey has been long and challenging, but I have always found a way to stay positive and overcome adversity. I spent much of my youth and adult years in prison, and when I was released in 2013, I had next to nothing. But I was determined to turn my life around and make something of myself. I worked hard and was able to achieve the American Dream: I bought my first home, got married, and had two beautiful little girls.

In 2019, I took a job in the oil fields of North Dakota, building pads for the oil rigs. I put my house on the market and sold it on January 30th, 2020. However, just two weeks after I arrived in Williston, the oilfield shut down due to COVID, and I found myself without a job. I was unsure of what to do next and decided to move my family to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

It was in this new place that my life was turned upside down again. My ex-wife had a mental breakdown and decided to leave, taking my younger daughters back to Southeast Idaho. I was left alone, in a new place, with a broken heart, and a broken spirit. I fell into a deep depression and was at the brink of relapsing into drugs. It was a dark time in my life, but I eventually found my way out of the darkness and into the light through disc golf.

Discovering disc golf changed my life completely. It gave me a purpose and a reason to get out of bed in the morning. But more importantly, it introduced me to a community of people who truly cared for each other, both on and off the course. In the disc golf community, I found a new family who welcomed me with open arms and supported me through my struggles. They helped me to focus on something positive, something that brought me joy, and something that helped me to heal. They helped me rebuild my life and showed me the true meaning of family and community.

I realized that the people in the disc golf community were not only a source of support and motivation, but also a source of inspiration. They taught me to see the good in people, to be grateful for what I had, and to see the glass as half full instead of half empty. They showed me that even in new places, you can always find a family who will be there for you, and that the most valuable thing in life is time, and to spend it with loved ones.

I also learned to take care of myself, both physically and mentally. As I progressed in my journey, I realized that the most valuable thing in life is time. I had a successful career in excavation, but these two years of only being able to see my daughters a few months out of the year really opened my eyes to understand the importance of time. I only get to see them during their school breaks which is Christmas, spring and summer breaks. Most of which I work in excavation and don't get to spend a whole lot of time with them all day. My daughters are 8 hours away from my home and it's hard to spend time with them. That's when I realized that I wanted to help others who are just like me, who just want to spend time with their kids. I want to help others reconnect and get their time back by becoming financially free. I want to help others become their own boss, so they can enjoy the luxuries of life like the sunshine on their face or holding their children's hands on the beach or their giggles when they come home after being gone all day or all weekend on a trip. Whatever it may be, I want to help others find freedom and reconnect with their loved ones. With the power of positivity, motivation, disc golf, and the self-drive to do it, I believe it is possible. The support and love of the disc golf community has been instrumental in my journey to overcome adversity and to find my way back to the person I always wanted to be. I want to pay it forward and help others who are going through similar struggles, to find their own path to financial freedom and to be able to spend more time with their loved ones.

I hope my story will inspire others to never give up and to keep a positive mindset, no matter how difficult life gets. To chase their dreams, and to find freedom and happiness by being their own boss, and enjoying the most valuable thing in life, which is time with loved ones. And I hope they will also see the importance of being part of a community that truly cares for each other, both on and off the course, and the role it plays in their journey to overcome adversity and achieve their goals.
