Discussions May Go in the Wrong Direction in Forums

I have always wondered why in forums links are used to answer a question. For example, "What is that cat with the tuft on his ears? Links are entered for dictionaries, encyclopedias, wiki. Before I know it I have spent hours reading material. To be sure, I would find out their are many kinds of cats. I probably, even came to a conclusion to my question.
But what if I need, NEED, to know the difference between ohms, and watts? Oh well, I might be spinning my wheels for hours and still be confused.
To be sure, a definition of forum is someplace where a discussion takes place. It is not, it seems, where questions are answered. Do not take any amount of offense to this blog, please. I am just confused a lot of the time and it seems many are reluctant to discuss and arrive at answers.

I think finding one's own answers may point some minds in the wrong direction.
I do explore forums because they end up being very funny. I go back over and over again.
Thanks, everyone, that helps a lot.
