Authority Topic Map
Want to position your blog as the go-to source in your niche? Start by creating an authority topic map!
Have you ever sat down to write a blog post and thought... “What should I write next?”
If you're nodding, you're not alone. That’s where a topic authority map becomes your blogging BFF.
In this post, I’ll explain what an authority map is, why it’s a secret weapon for building topical authority (and ranking better in Google), and how to easily create one using tools we all have access to in Wealthy Affiliate.
What Is an Authority Topic Map?
An authority topic map (sometimes called a content map or topical map) is a visual or written plan of all the key topics and subtopics related to your niche that you want to become known for.
It helps you:
- Cover all essential angles of your niche
- Avoid repeating content
- Naturally create internal links
- Show Google you know your stuff (hello, rankings!)
Think of it like creating a roadmap to make sure your blog becomes the ultimate hub of knowledge in your niche.
Why Is It Important for Your WA Blog or Niche Site?
Google is leaning hard into topical authority. If you want to rank for competitive keywords, it's not enough to write one great article—you need to cover a subject deeply and connect the dots.
Creating an authority map:
Helps you build clusters of related content
Makes blog planning WAY easier
Boosts internal linking (Google loves that)
Encourages visitors to stay longer and read more
Builds trust with your audience
Sets you apart from hobby bloggers
How to Create Your Own Authority Map (Step-by-Step)
Here’s my simple “WA-friendly” way to create an authority topic map:
- Choose Your Core Topic (Your Niche)
- Start with your main niche. For example:
- “Loose Leaf Tea”
- “Budget Travel for Seniors”
- “Beginner Guitar Lessons”
Write this in the center of a page or digital whiteboard.
1. Brainstorm Main Subtopics (Content Pillars)
Ask: What are the 5–7 main categories that fall under your niche?
For "Loose Leaf Tea" this could be:
Types of tea (green, oolong, black…)
Brewing methods
Tea health benefits

Tea accessories
Tea history and culture
Tea reviews
Hosting tea parties
Break Subtopics Into Blog Post Ideas
Now take each category and brainstorm specific blog posts.
Example:
Subtopic: Tea Accessories
Blog Ideas:
"What Is a Gaiwan and How Do You Use One?”
The Best Teapots for Brewing Loose Leaf Tea”
“Why Every Tea Lover Needs a Digital Kettle”
Tip: Use the WA Keyword Tool to check if these ideas have search volume!
Link the Content
As you write, link related blog posts together. This creates a “content cluster” and shows Google you’re building a web of authority.
Keep It Updated!
This isn’t a one-time thing.
Update your topic map regularly as your niche grows or evolves. Add new content ideas, retire old ones, and track your progress.
Tools You Can Use
A Google Doc or Google Sheet
Mind-mapping tools like MindMeister or Whimsical
Trello or Notion for drag-and-drop planning
Pen & paper (seriously—whatever works!)
Example: A Mini Authority Map for a “Tea Blog”
Here’s a super simple example of a topic cluster for a tea niche:
Main Topic: Loose Leaf Tea
Health Benefits
Green tea for energy
Herbal teas for sleep
Brewing Techniques
Gaiwan vs. Teapot
Water temperature tips
Tea Culture
Japanese tea ceremony
Afternoon tea traditions

Building authority in your niche doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A topic map makes your content strategy clear, focused, and goal-oriented.
Whether you’re just starting or have 100 posts already, mapping your authority content gives you a bird’s-eye view of where you are—and where you’re headed.
So go ahead, grab a blank doc, and start mapping out your niche. Your future rankings (and readers) will thank you!
Another suggestion is to ask your favorite AI (mine is ChatGPT) to help build your Authority Map. Mine has helped me build a "mini" version (with 50 topics) before and is now helping to build a larger one.
