Today (25 April) here in the great 'Down Under' both New Zealand and Australia commemorate the service of men and woman who have so bravely laid, and still do lay their lives on the line in the name of freedom. Many of these brave souls never returned to their families and many who do endure years of pain and mental torment as a result of the horrors they endured.

It is a day of remembrance and in my book is the most important day in the calendar.

The term ANZAC comes from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who fought side by side in Gallipoli against the Ottoman Empire during the First world war. It is more than just a word now...it is an identity.

Every free nation has its commemoration day to recognize the selfless acts of the men and woman who go forth to protect our rights to be who we want to be and make our own choices in our lives...our freedoms.

Never take for granted the choices and freedoms you have as there are many others in this world who do not enjoy what we call rights.

YOU have so many opportunities. Enjoy your freedoms that have been gifted you by the sacrifices of so many. Have fun, enjoy life and be grateful for the opportunity to make choices for yourself and your family.

To those of you who have served in or are serving in the forces for the good of your fellow countrymen....

I salute you

Lest we forget

Steve

You're welcome John.

I did some researches and I found out that even in Italy there are a few memorial services for ANZAC today, I did not know that!

In Italy, we have a national holiday today, Italy celebrates the Liberation from Fascism...

1

Yes the folks from down under are represented in a number of countries due to our involvement in a number of world conflicts.
Liberation from fascism is a good reason to celebrate. Enjoy your day Gerlinde.

Lest we forget! Few Queenslander's, let alone Australians, know that the man recognized as "the architect of Anzac Day" is a former priest from Kangaroo Point and Red Hill in Brisbane. He was Anglican priest Canon David Garland - who received an Order of the British Empire in 1934 and died in 1939 - an Australian honor. He laid out how Anzac Day should be observed throughout the World.

1

And still observed over 100 years on.
Thank you for that Carol.

A salute to honor those who gave. To the ones who came home and to the ones that did not come home.

1

The ultimate sacrifice made by others for us.
Thanks for your response.

Lest we forget.

1

Indeed.

Thanks for this post. Good information for not just Australians but for everyone who is living because others gave their lives.

1

In essence it's gratitude.
You're so right..."because others gave their lives".
What greater gift can there be.

Good to remember those people who worked hard for other people.

Indeed it is Jimmy.

We should all remember those who have served to protect our freedoms.
Well said.
And thank you to all who have served and are currently serving!

Nicely put Albert.

New Zealand is fortunate enough not to be attacked directly. Australia had the Japanese raid on Darwin. But other than that both nations commitments have not been on home territory. For that they can be grateful!

1

Indeed Michael. We in NZ are very fortunate to be protected by distance and some mighty useful allies.
We have not seen conflict on our shores since the end of the Maori wars in 1872. And for this we are indeed grateful.
