I've just read an article on meditation and how it can increase your brain power, It states:


Did you know that your measurable level of intelligence (IQ), memory, and overall brain power are not permanently set levels? And that, there are things you can do to make yourself much smarter, no matter your age?

Its true, once believed to be constant beyond a certain life stage, mainstream science has now accepted the ability for each of us to readily change the power level of our brains.

What then, is the number one method of increasing my brain power?

Meditation. There are an infinite number of ways meditation can increase your memory, brain power, and intelligence, here are a couple:

1. Meditation makes your brain bigger. Did you know that just like your bicep, you can train your brain to increase in size?

In fact, a 2000 study at Harvard University found that meditation beneficially increased the physical size of the brain regions associated with such qualities as focused attention, deep thought, memory, and brain power while simultaneously quieting the electrical activity within the regions associated with anxiety, depression, fear, and anger.


2. Meditation gives your whole brain synchronization. Your brain has two hemispheres, left and right.


Left hemisphere thinking is logical, practical, & mathematical. Right hemisphere thinking is non-linear, intuitive, abstract, big-picture focused, and creative.


Can you guess which brain-half is dominant for you?

Numerous studies have shown that humanity's greatest thinkers, inventors, artists, and scientists use both brain hemispheres together, in unison.

Meditation has been scientifically proven to synchronize your left and right brain, allowing extremely beneficial changes in hemispheric thought communication, neural chemistry, and intellectual processing power

So there you have it....it's official....get down to the brain gym and start exercising those little grey cells

Hi Sandra, That's a lot of research you have been reading up on meditation. The improvement comes in only when you do it on a regular basis like every day for about 10 to 20 minutes. Or at the least once a week for about 30 minutes in order to be effective. Just like we exercise the bicep for a longer stretch over the weekend. [Kelsey]

I've always had a keen interest in psychology, and meditation and mindfulness are very useful tools when it comes to sorting your head out....I started learning about meditation when my husband died about 5 years ago after being put on antidepressants, which I wasn't happy about taking, I'm always on the lookout for alternative methods to meds.

You need to take up meditation, apart from the above there are many benefits to it especially as we age.

I'm been accused of being right brained; but I think I use both. This is good news for the aging brain. Next post -- brain exercises?

It would seem that meditation is the way to go if you want to expand your brain-power, I must say I do it myself and find it has a calming and relaxing effect, beats all medication.
