Are Men Better At It Than Women?

Website building that is! (and all the other stuff that goes with it).

Thought that would grab your attention....as it's a well known fact that men and women think very differently I was wondering how many men would own up to having problems building their website from a technical view point that is. ( I do know they don't like to ask for directions when driving).

I know for me it's been easy in some areas and difficult in others, I find I get stuck in what should be pretty straightforward areas and have no idea why, maybe because my brain is looking for a bigger problem than there is, and also I'm more of a practical thinker and I think the way some instructions are explained and written doesn't always make sense, unless it's in picture format or I can picture it in my head I'm stuffed.

I would be interested to know how many men or women have a similar experience.

For me, it's a lot to learn, but the more I work with it the easier it gets. I also learned that if you take the training and don't get behind on the steps, (don't rush it), the training makes it very easy.
I like your men versus women twist on this.
Best wishes for you.
Keith

Hi Keith,
nice to meet you,
My thinking behind this blog was do men find it easier than women to learn the technical side of website building and all it entails, from the response I've had, I think it's half and half, which is interesting!

Sandra

Hi Sandra, classic headline, I think at the core it comes down to how we process information, visual, audio or emotive, so on that level, there is no real separation between men or women more so on how we process information.
Kicking off every day is a learning curve some days are steeper than others hopefully we do each task enough that it gets ingrained in our poor little noodles, so we get to the stage where we can just do it without thinking about it, one of the main reasons that the WA way and processes are so good.
At the end of the day, no one is better or worse than anyone else, it comes down to how much energy we are prepared to chuck at the wall.

There is a very hilarious ted talk on youtube where the psychologist explains that men have boxes in their brains and women networks. https://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=3XjUFYxSxDk
(As always, you need to paste the url together)

I've been off line all afternoon due to the sever being down thank you Yahoo!
anyway thank you all for your replies, some Interesting answers,

Sandra

Love your header, I think everybody thinks different depending on what they know and have learned in life.

Thank you Mike for your comment,
I do think men on the whole have a better grasp of most things technical such as car engines.

Sandra

I agree but I have seen some good female mechanics too.

I think men and women generally think in different ways, men naturally more linear while women more in an inclusive way. But it doesn't mean that every man or woman does it that way. I was trained in mathematics and therefore quite capable in linear thinking, but in areas where another way of thinking is more suitable I can easily change. I see from my experience that men have more difficulty in this flexibility of thinking and perspectives.

Hi Heidi
I think men by their very nature tend to thick more black and white with no grey areas hence why their problem solving is very different to us girlies.

Sandra

Yes, I agree

Sandra

Men VS Women takes in very large groups and paint them with a very large brush. I would like to think that it isn't as black and white as most people think and our Media portrays.

We each have different skills we bring to the table and we each have different knowledge levels.

But the general public has different expectations. The online marketing is a great example.

I work in the IT field specific to health care. If you give me the right software and the right hardware, in a couple days I can have a Active Directory Forest up and running with the correct settings for User accounts, Wins, DNS and DHCP. I can start to integrate the accounting system with the EMR, Clinincs, Imaging and the OR.

But try to get me to install a widget and link it to a auto responder to drive a opt-in list and you might as well talked Greek to me. SEO, Plugins, PPC, tags and catagories are terms I don't have to deal with in my work.

In this area I'm at the beginning of the journey and thanks to WA I 'm starting to understand a bit of it. But to me it's like being dropped in the middle of OZ with a map of New Jersey and told to find Buckingham Place.

And for the record, I will read instructions and ask directions if I have to. :)

I enjoyed the post and thanks for getting me thinking.

Percy

Hi Percy,

I wasn't trying to stereotype the men vs women, I was just wondering the difference in the thinking aspect of the two,
is it easier for men to grasp the technical side of web building and all it entails, after reading your reply obviously not, I must say I'm glad I'm not the only one that has problems with those nasty little widgets lol

Many thanks Sandra

Not a problem Sandra. I knew you were not trying to stereotype the genders.

Because I have worked in the high-tech field for what seems like forever, I would have to agree that there are more men in the industry than women. But also let me say that some of the most technically competent people I have had the privilege to work with have been women.

But the saddest group of people I know of are the ones that have the talent and do not apply themselves. Unfortunately, this is an issue for both genders.

I do think we look at certain things in different ways. I think men are better at reverse parking for example and women are better at looking at instructions! :)

Well, I hardly ever read the instructions but want to find out myself - and often get frustrated and feel forced to read the instructions, at that point....

Thanks Jude

Yes I agree also there are more male chiefs then women as cooking is considered to be feminine!
I know some women who are pretty grim at cooking,
By the way I'm very good at driving backwards. That says a lot about me lol
