Before I used to think that people bought products because they needed them.
Simple- right?
Wrong.
I actually realised that most people aren't actually buying the product.
In fact- they are buying what the product represents ,
The outcome.
The feeling.
The versions of themselves attached to it.
And honestly? Once I understood this, I understood marketing differently.
From a marketing perspective , products rarely sell because of specifications alone.
People usually buy because of what they believe something will do for them.
For example: People don't just buy skincare.
They buy:
- confidence
- clearer skin
- feeling better about themselves
People don't just buy fitness programmes.

They buy:
- discipline
- transformation
- becoming the version of themselves they imagine
The product is the vehicle
The outcome is the real motivation.
One thing consumer behaviour taught me is that people often buy things connected to identity.
Sometimes conciously , sometimes not.
People buy from brands because they reflect:
- who they are
- who they want to become
- how they want others to see them
Which explains why branding and positioning matter so much.
Because products are often emotional symbols .
What's interesting is that decisions often begin emotionally.
Someone sees something and thinks:
“That feels like me.”
Or
“That’s the version of myself I want.”
Then logic steps in later:
"Well… it makes sense because…”
Marketing made me realise that how often emotions quitely realise how often emotions quietly lead decisions.
From a social media marketing perspective , this happens constantly.
People aren't only just engaging with products- they are engaging with lifestyles
Aesthetic.
Identity.
Transformation.
Social media makes outcomes visible.
And visibility influences desire.
