Where I've Been
About a year and a half ago, I wrote a post about how I got a job as a blog manager for a large website. It is my most popular post to date, and I still get comments on it regularly. I know most of you asked that I keep you updated on my progress.
Well, I didn't do such a great job of that, I'm sorry to say. After that post, I spent the better part of the year away from WA. In that time, I have seen my career path shift several times.
Here are some of the things I have been up to while I was away:
- I started a side business as a freelance fiction editor, and found two clients!
- I gained new skills learning how to manage two WordPress blogs and some of the social media tasks
- I joined Twitter and found a writing community I love, although I still have trouble participating regularly (working on it!)

- I've still been researching new online programs and tools and learning how to use them (Yeah, I'm a nerd)
- I'm continuing work on a novel that I started last month for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)
- Both of the websites I worked for closed down
Wait... What??
I know, I know, that last one was a plot twist. But it's okay. Only by being pushed out of that comfortable bubble did I discover something really amazing... I have built up a ton of skills that I can leverage to help other business owners!
I'm starting a new journey into the world of virtual assisting and marketing support. And I've got to say, I think I've finally found my niche. I looked to so many other options for what I could do with my skills, but none of them were a good fit.
While I love writing, freelance writing didn't appeal to me. I would rather save that energy for my creative work.
But I do enjoy helping, and I loved the blog support work I got to do with JARA.
Reading all that back sounds like I am an extremely busy person, but truthfully I am still in that in-between place. Short bursts of busyness followed by long stretches of too much free time.
What's Next
My goal for this upcoming year is to get a stable amount of work coming in, and I think being a VA is the ticket.
So, my return to WA marks the start of building a new website to promote my services. I want to use this platform to document the experience, and share some of what I have learned over the last several months.
The path to financial freedom is a winding road, isn't it?
