Online Business Creation: Dealing With Defeat

We all have days when something goes wrong. Sometimes we have days when it all seems to go wrong. So how do you get past the stuff that will, if you allow, stop you in your tracks? There are ways (beyond chocolate and liquor) to stop defeat in it's tracks and downgrade it to an interruption. (Note- we're talking "stuff" here - not life and death. That's another situation entirely.)

Realize Stuff Happens

Stuff happens to everyone. Even the over-achiever in the next cubicle - the one who always looks entirely put-together and on top of their game. Even the newbie who hits top ranking right within hours. NO ONE IS IMMUNE. If you are alive and breathing, there will be times, even days and months, when stuff happens.

Realize This Too Will Pass

Nothing on this planet is forever. The bad day/event/situation you are facing will pass. All you have to do is keep breathing until you reach the other side of it. Take it one breath at a time if you have to.

Acknowledge the Situation

Acknowledge the fact that something bad/irritating/painful is happening in your life right now. Moan. Groan. Complain. Cry. Pray. Eat chocolate. Drink beer or wine. Play umpteen games of spider solitaire. Do whatever makes you feel better - for a limited time. Take an entire day only if you absolutely need to. Otherwise, set a timer and allow yourself that amount of time to be miserable.

Get Over It

Once you've had your pity party/drama diva breakdown/etc., mark it all done. Finis. No more belaboring it, no more wallowing in it. So you lost a website, blog post, article. So you get no support from family/friends. So your big idea fell flat. Guess what? If you keep moving forward, it might even happen again.

Take What Action You Can

If there is something you can do to remedy the situation, do it. If you need to learn how to do something, find a tutorial article or video. If you need to spend extra time on work, do it. If you have to re-create, re-write, re-install, do it.

Fire up the coffee pot, crank up (preferred music) and apply BIC (butt-in-chair) until it's done. Put a do-not-disturb sign on your door just in case your family might decide to actually comply for once.

Celebrate Your Survival

Congratulations. You have downgraded potential defeat to mere interruption status. Once you move past the event and get on with realizing your online business goals, you have effectively shackled defeat. Celebrate the victory, however small, because the process will be repeated. Success won't come easy - you'll have to tame it. The more proficient you become in dealing with "stuff," the quicker you will grab, and hold, that success.

This is great advice! Well done post.

So true, life has it's ups and downs, I prefer the ups as we all do, but how we handle our downs is what makes the ups higher. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful post.

Very true! Life has a lot of hills and valleys and we just have to keep going forward! Don't dwell in the past, just take it's lessons and move towards your goals. Thank you for the great post! :-)

life is never just roses and sunshine, get over it, move on, move up! Love it!

Good post. You have to keep moving forward. No looking back. Learn from your mistakes. Debbie

I really prefer to learn from other people's mistakes but I just can't seem to stop making my own. : )

Nice posting Rainey. The sea washes in and the sea washes out. They have a lovely saying in India. "Things will be alright in the end. If things are not alright, then it is not the end".

Like this one, Jerry! Thanks for posting it.
