A crazy 24 Hours - Storm Eowyn

Started yesterday evening on the way back from an appointment, driving along and my phone starts screaming at me - Emergency Red Alert - High winds coming to your area... we obviously knew it was coming, however I had never had one of these on my phone (got me thinking about the poor people suffering fires in USA and the war zones throughout the world - I assume the technology is being used there also to warn people).

Got home, pinned down the garage furniture and put most things in the garage, also put a wooden bar across the back gate and screwed it securely shut.

Woke up today and cancelled all walks and appointments, lorries, van and cars have overturned on the A1, main road connecting Scotland to England. Then later on heard and saw a house near us (500 metres max) has lost its roof. It blew off and damaged a car landing on the road.

We've been lucky and other than a little damage to our small greenhouse, we've been blessed.

Wishing everyone else who has been hit by this storm best wishes and stay safe wherever you are!!!

Good Morning Peter,

Good to hear you are ok. When Mother Nature gets upset, it can get very scary.
In Spain, we had the enormous floods recently. 75,000 homes and 120,000 cars affected. More than 220 people died and they are still looking for 3 that are missing.
For every "normal" day you are allowed to live, one should count it as a blessing.

Greetings from the south of Spain.

Taetske

Good morning Taetske,
I remember the floods well, absolutely horrific, cars floating in garages etc. I didn't know there were 3 people still missing, can't imagine what the families are going through. You are absolutely right about counting each day as a blessing.
Take care and have a blessed day
Peter

Hi Peter,

I have been through such events both sides of the pond, hurricane Andrew was the first major one for me, in the USA, but I also got hit, I think it was 1987 (confirmed by Gemini)

I had come back from Florida for the summer (UK Snow Bird) to wrap up one of my 4 storey flat conversions, it took parts of the slate roof off that I dad just finished the day before. It was 3 days before I was scheduled to fly back!

Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was the one that affected me the most, both financially and mentally.

Hi Rob,
It's so scary how something 35+ and 20 years ago sticks in the mind so vividly. I hope the slate roof is standing strong to this day after repair.
To your continued success and I hope you are making progress with your book.
Peter

Wow, Peter!

My heart goes out to you from someone who has had to deal with this type of thing many times in my life, living in Florida.

Glad you are okay :)

Teri

Teri,
All good, but a bit scary - but nothing compared to the hurricanes etc you get out there. Also nothing compared to the fires - hearts go out to these people.
Thanks and all the best
Peter

Wow Peter, sounds like you spent some time preparing and it paid off. Glad to hear you are OK and there was only minor damage. Stay safe!

Thanks Kyle - appreciate it.

Glad you are ok, Peter! Things can always be replaced.

Mel

Mel,
Thanks and I couldn’t agree more with you.
All the best
Peter
