Hey there fellow WA'ers and welcome to my post where we will discuss the difference between affiliate programs and affiliate networks. For those starting out within the world of affiliate marketing, this can be an area of some confusion (at least it was for me haha).

In many cases, you will be guided by the avenue that a particular brand has taken - i.e. you want to promote them and they only work through a network. However if it is a product you are after, you may have a choice.

So if that is the case and you need some help, I thought I would just write about it here. Let's check it all out...

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Now for the purposes of this post, let's start by defining what affiliate marketing is. Affiliate marketing is a type of online marketing where an advertiser (the merchant) pays a commission to an affiliate (the publisher) for promoting and selling their products or services.

The affiliate earns a commission based on the number of sales or leads generated through their marketing efforts.

There are two primary ways to participate in affiliate marketing: through an affiliate program or an affiliate network. Here's a breakdown of each:

Affiliate Programs

An affiliate program is a direct relationship between a merchant and an affiliate. The merchant creates their own program, with their own rules, and the affiliate signs up to promote the merchant's products or services.

Some merchants create their own in-house affiliate program, while others use third-party platforms to manage their program.
