What is goal setting?

Well goal setting can be described in a lot of ways. People have used terms like SMART goals.

S - Specific

M - Measurable

A - Attainable

R - Realistic

T - Timebound

As a very simple example which most of us will relate to is as follows:

"I want to reduce my weight from 200 lbs to 190lbs by the end of Dec' 2018"

Ok Ok... That's my goal but I am actually 6 ft1". It's not that bad ok :)

I want you to notice I wrote from "a" to b" by a certain time frame. So It is specific, measurable, attainable (10 lbs in months), realistic and time bound.

Well today I want to talk about a different goal setting technique which has helped me achieve my goals in a much simpler way than any other technique has done for me.

The Process

You take a big goal and break it down into small little pieces. I call them micro goals. Then take the smallest piece and try to take action on that. It does two very important things :

1. A small task is achieved out of the big goal

2. It builds confidence to help you move forward

This is also the first step that you can take if you are a procrastinator.

Repeat the process until you get to the biggest piece and since you have been achieving a lot of small goals you have gathered so much momentum that you have a very good shot at conquering whatever is left. The smaller pieces are your “x”’s to achieve the bigger “y” which is the ultimate goal.

Will Smith's story

I came across this story about Will Smith online. When he was about 12 years old, his dad tore down a wall in front of his business and told him and his brother to rebuild it. Will smith said it is impossible to do this. He said don’t think about the wall just lay every brick the best as you can until you have a wall16 ft high 30 ft long. It took them 1 year and a half. Staring at the wall their dad said " don't you ever tell me that something is impossible".

Nick Saban's theory @ 59-0

Does this name sound familiar. Well I know it does to all the Alabama fans out there, ROLL TIDE!!! You guessed it right I’m an Alabama fan and this story is about Nick Saban who is the head coach of the Alabama football team. Just to put it in perspective for success he has won 5 national championships with different quarterbacks. So I was watching this game where Alabama is playing a weaker opponent at that time and it’s the fourth quarter two minutes are left in Alabama is leading 59-0. And Alabama player makes a mistake and does not exit Q the play delay Nick wants him to execute. Nick is on the sideline going crazy about that one play and he’s giving him please of his mind to make him understand that he made a mistake. I want you guys to notice something here the school is 59-0 and two minutes are left in the fourth quarter. He was mad because all he cares about is the process which is the input or “X”.

The result does matter but what we have full control over is the input and that is the more important thing.

Challenge

And now for one of the most exciting part of the blog. The challenge :

Take a goal, break it down into smaller pieces and start with the smallest piece which you can accomplish quickly.

Define "x" and "y" along the way. Do this at least for 2 weeks and share your results.

Conclusion

Do what Will Smith and his brother did " lay one brick at a time" as perfectly as you can and soon enough you will have a wall built or follow what Nick teaches his students the game is for 60 minutes and you have to play every 60 minutes of the game even if you are up 59-0.

Just focus on the most important task at hand right now (small piece) which I call on my website as "X" or the input and "Y" which is the output would take care of itself. The only thing we can do is to give our best towards it. If you are honest with yourself and have given the best you can than in 95% of the cases you will have the result that you desire.

For those of you who understand the law of attraction and the power of the universe, when you really put the best effort in whatever you want to do the universe conspires to get you what you want.
