Work From Home - How I Used My Vacation Day

The picture pretty much covers what I thought my day was going to be like. I had taken a day off to work on my blog... and because I watched some awesome playoff hockey and didn't feel like going into my real job today.

I will keep this pretty short, but my goal was to finish at least 2 posts so I could publish them throughout the weekend. Turns out, working from home is harder than it sounds. There are tons of distractions and more fun (meaning not work) things to do.

So I got one post done that I will publish tonight. I have a decent start on a second that I will complete.

The next time I take a day off to work on my blog I need to stay focused. What kind of things help you stay on track for working from home days? The more ideas the merrier.

Cheers!

Nate

I've been working at home independently for years - sounds great but has its challenges. Grunt work is the most difficult (administrative work that I dislike but is necessary). Sales Calls on leads were great but prospecting its hard to keep from getting distracted. Writing and research for my website, it has its moments. I know how my brain works and for me I do have a dedicated work space and shut the office door and have some objectives that I need to accomplish and try to shut everything else out.
Eventually I have writers block or go into a brain fog and I just need to reset, it happens but I need to set up times during the day to get the tasks accomplished. Its not me being at home, its work. And despite what people may think (at least for me) I am not in my PJs during the day (well not all the time) sometimes literally I will get dressed as if I am going out. My wife would say, where are you going? And I would tell her I have some work to do in the office - to me just dressing out of my PJs can set the tone of seriousness that I need to get the tasks for the day accomplished. hope this helps!

This is great. I thought I had heard you needed to get out of your PJs, but it really is tempting to stay in them all day.

Thanks for the input... experience does help

Cheers!

Do not turn on the tv to watch sports..or anything for that matter ..tv is wasted time
Oh and stay off of facebook unless it is to benefit urm business...also wasted time better spent working on ur business

I did well on the first... but failed on the social media part. I did post a bit for my business, but could have been more focused.

Great advice Cathy!

Cheers!

P.S. I like the fancy Top 200 you earned. Congrats

This does not sound good LOL
I am taking tomorrow off... I definitely need advice to stay focussed! I plan on writing at least 2 posts as my SAC site is looking kind of pathetic in the writing department!
However, I must add... sometimes we just need a break and then everything falls into place!

Best of luck to you Liz on your day off. I know you can get those 2 posts done.

But I agree... sometimes a break is what we really need.

Cheers!

I get very distracted if I work at home with my wife and two dogs plus the occasional grandchild vying for attention. I get most of my research and writing done at work while I am monitoring CCTV cameras in a gatehouse where I am on my own and on a site where nothing ever happens. I save for home the technical stuff that can prove to be a little difficult to do on an iPhone.

Another great idea! Maybe work from home really means work from another location. You are 100% spot on that there are a lot of distractions at home.

Thanks Steve!

Cheers!

I love classical music and have just downloaded several hours, about 20, of classical albums to my PC. I turn on Windows media player, put my earbuds in, turn down the sound to where I can still hear videos from training and the phone. It blocks out all outside sounds.

I wouldn't suggest this with anything but all instrumental music. Music with lyrics is as bad as listening to the song itself. haha

Sonny

That is a great idea Sonny! I agree that the music cannot have words or it would distract me.

Thanks for the pointer.

Cheers!
