A Comment on Spam
I'm pretty new to having a website and getting comments, so many of you may have had a similar experience and this might be old hat for you. The first was a comment written in Russian. I didn't understand Russian and asked for help. Several WA members told me about Google Translate. you just copy and paste it in and it's translated fast.
The Russian was an advertisement for some product having little relevance to my cat story. The next was in French which I do understand and was link to a site specializing in female products. Both of them used exclamation marks kind of as though they were saying something about the content.
I never would have imagined using a comment to a totally unrelated site to promote a product. I mean had I printed them most people would think SPAM! That is not a good way to gain trust and interest in one's product.
I can't imagine who thought it up but it was a bad idea. Just in case you find these in your comments I now distrust the ones not in English right off. But who knows what they write unless you can read their language or get it translated.

As others have said - just delete them Nancy. There are lots of unscrupulous people unfortunately who do spam. I would also be wary of many of the ones in English as well - but at least you can read those and make your own judgement.
Thanks for bringing that up Nancy - not something I have experienced yet, but something I am now prepared for.
Delete 'em all, Nancy. Some people got nothing better to do. We have, so don't waste time on trying to figure these types of messages out. By the way, regarding another language, think of it this way, if they could read your article, which is written in English, then they can comment in English, so you can be pretty sure these comments are spam.
Yes, it struck me as odd too that they could read English but wrote in another language. that is another red flag.
Need not waste time in translating n then spaming.I also got many inmy siterubix site but not on my domain godsblessing.in
Hey guys Akistmet is one of a few good plugins for wordpress, but it doesn't block them all, what you must understand nancy is that as soon as you approve a comment from a known spammer, you will not get asked again to approve the next one, wordpress logs ip address, email and website, and white lists them if you approve them, the problem is that akismet scans the content of the comment for banned words and then either flags them as spam or ham, and you still have to decide, in your settings for wordpress, make sure you tick the following, that an adminsitrator always has to approve a comment, that in order to post a comment they must be registerd. Have a look at the following plugins these block based on known spammers ips or email addresses, and deny's them from regestering at all, you will need to tweak the settings to your likings but it has stopped heaps of spam. Try these http://wordpress.org/plugins/clobber-spam-users/ and http://wordpress.org/plugins/ban-hammer/ I have a few more that i use but cant remember them right now.
Thanks Chris,
I copy and pasted your advice. Fortunately, I haven't approved any spammers content. When you press spam does word press automatically block that address is future?
I didn't know this. I believe Kyle said using back links can harm you as Google is not happy with these tricks.
Hello Nancy. Install this plugin: Akismet. Once you activate it, it should eliminate the spam going forward on your site. When you go to the Akismet website, just set the bar to $0 and it will be free. Let me know if you need any help
Thank you MBobb,
I went to my plugins on my word press dashboard and clicked installed plug ins. Askimet is already installed but maybe not yet activated. I may need help in doing this because I usually do. I'll look it over and if I do i'll PM you.
Hi Nancy, I've not ran across this yet, but something to definitely watch for. Glad you got the help you needed. Thanks for the heads up. Tina
Yes, it's really weird. I just got another one but it's in English. Comments should not be confused with free advertising. And as I wrote it doesn't in any way make the spammer look good, rather the reverse.

Hey Nancy. I'd recommend installing GASP http://wordpress.org/plugins/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/ as the majority of this kind of spam is automated. GASP adds a tick box next to the submit button on comments that only a human being is capable of making use of thereby eliminating all computer generated spam commenting. :) Rich.
Hi Rich,
Is this the same as the Captcha? I have that under my comments.
Thanks very much for this, Rich. :)
