Hello Wealthy Affiliate Community!

After learning Gen Z vocabulary AND their sarcasm tactics, I thought I was ready to engage with comments on my content.

I was wrong.

The comment: "This content is bussin fr fr no cap πŸ”₯"
My response: "Thank you! I worked really hard on making it bus correctly!"
What happened next: Screenshot. Group chat. Eternal embarrassment.

Turns out, RESPONDING to Gen Z requires a whole different skill set. Here's what I've learned (through painful trial and error).

THE GOLDEN RULES

Rule #1: When in Doubt, Keep It Simple

DON'T try to match their energy by using slang you just learned.

❌ "Thanks bestie! This comment is giving main character energy and it's totally bussin, no cap! πŸ’€πŸ”₯"
βœ… "Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! πŸ™"

Why it works: Authenticity beats trying too hard. Every. Single. Time.

Rule #2: Emojis Are Your Friend (But Use Sparingly)

Safe emojis for any response:

  • ❀️ (genuine appreciation)
  • πŸ™ (thank you)
  • 😊 (friendly)
  • πŸ”₯ (only if they used it first)

Dangerous emojis:

  • πŸ’€ (unless you're 100% sure of context)
  • 😭 (can be genuine or mocking)
  • πŸ€ͺ (just...no)
  • Any emoji your daughter wouldn't use

My rule: If I have to google what it means, I don't use it.

Rule #3: Mirror Their Energy (Carefully)

Their comment: "This is so helpful, thank you!"
Your response: "So glad it helped! Thanks for reading!"

Their comment: "this slaps"
Your response: "Appreciate you! πŸ™"

Notice: I didn't say "glad it slaps" because I'm not confident enough yet. Baby steps.

RESPONSE TEMPLATES THAT ACTUALLY WORK

For Positive Comments

When they say: "This is fire πŸ”₯"
You say: "Thank you! πŸ™" or "Appreciate that! ❀️"
DON'T say: "I'm so glad it's fire!" (sounds forced)

When they say: "You ate this"
You say: "Thanks for reading!" or "Appreciate you! πŸ™"
DON'T say: "I did eat it!" (just...trust me)

When they say: "No cap this helped"
You say: "So glad it was helpful!"
DON'T say: "No cap, thanks!" (leave the no cap to them)

For Questions/Engagement

When they ask: "Can you do a post about [topic]?"
You say: "Great idea! I'll add it to my list" or "That's a solid suggestion!"
DON'T say: "Bet! That's gonna slap!" (too much)

When they disagree: "This take is mid tbh"
You say: "Appreciate the feedback! What would you suggest?" (professional)
DON'T say: "You're mid!" (never fight Gen Z in the comments)

For Unclear Comments (Sarcasm Unknown)

When they say: "Interesting take"
Safe response: "Thanks for reading! What are your thoughts?"
Why it works: You're not assuming positive or negativeβ€”you're inviting dialogue

When they say: "Sure, Jan"
Safe response: "😊" or just like the comment
Why it works: Acknowledging without engaging the sarcasm

THE DON'TS (Learn From My Failures)

❌ DON'T: Use slang incorrectly

Their comment: "This hits different"
My response: "Thanks! I tried to make it hit!"
Why it failed: That's not how "hits different" works

❌ DON'T: Over-explain yourself

Their comment: "Okay but why tho"
Bad response: "Well, as I mentioned in paragraph 3, line 4, the reason is because of the historical context that dates back to..."
Better response: "Good question! [Brief answer]"

Why: Gen Z values concise. They asked casually, answer casually.

❌ DON'T: Try to be their friend

Their comment: "Love this!"
Cringe response: "OMG bestie thank you so much you're literally the best I love you! πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•"
Better response: "Thank you! ❀️"

Why: Professional appreciation > forced friendship energy

❌ DON'T: Argue in the comments

Their comment: "This ain't it"
Bad response: "Actually, if you read the entire post you'd understand..."
Better response: "Appreciate the feedback!" or just don't respond

Why: You will not win. Even if you're right. Trust me

MY PERSONAL CHECKLIST

Before hitting "send" on any response, I ask:

  1. Does this sound like me? (authentic > trendy)
  2. Am I trying too hard? (if yes, delete and simplify)
  3. Would I cringe reading this tomorrow? (the ultimate test)
  4. Did I use slang correctly? (if unsure, remove it)
  5. Is this professional yet friendly? (sweet spot)

If I answer "no" to any of these, I rewrite it.

REAL EXAMPLES FROM MY LEARNING CURVE

Example 1: The Overcorrection

Comment: "This post slaps!"
My first draft: "Thanks fam! It really do be slapping! πŸ’―πŸ”₯"
What I actually sent: "Thank you! πŸ™"
Result: No screenshots in group chats = success

Example 2: The Assumption

Comment: "Wow. Just wow."
My response: "Thank you so much!"
Reality: They hated it. The "wow" was sarcastic.
Lesson learned: When in doubt, ask "Good wow or bad wow?"

Example 3: The Win

Comment: "Actually helpful, ty"
My response: "Glad it helped! Thanks for reading!"
Why it worked: Simple, genuine, didn't overthink it

Quick Reference Guide

Safe responses for ANY positive comment:

  • "Thank you! πŸ™"
  • "Appreciate you!"
  • "So glad you found it helpful!"
  • "Thanks for reading! ❀️"

Safe responses for questions:

  • "Great question! [Brief answer]"
  • "I'll cover that in a future post!"
  • "What specifically would you like to know?"

Safe responses for unclear comments:

  • "😊" (just the emoji)
  • Like the comment
  • "Thanks for engaging!"

Your Turn!

Share in the comments:

  1. Your most embarrassing response to a Gen Z comment
  2. A time you got it right
  3. Your go-to response template

Let's learn from each other's mistakes!

May your responses be ever authentic and never screenshot-worthy!

How 'neat' is this, cool dude? 😎

LOL - I luckily haven't dealt with any GenZers yet :)

This is honestly an excellent post. I learned a lot! I'm gonna bookmark it.

yay

My go-to response template is just a thumb's up. Or I don't bother at all. They either speak school-taught ENGLISH or get zero response lol.

Very simple! I've noticed the importance of emojis with this generation.

Thank you for the excellent advice and putting yourself out there with embarrassing moments in texting to Gen Z'ers. I appreciate you doing that so others may learn. I tip my hat to you.

Thanks for the lesson. I believe I need to study more. Millennium mindset is different from the 1960s and 1970s mindset.
