The Day Ended Brightly!

As I sat down to "engage" with the community by responding to emails, my youngest daughter struck this conversation about this "deep" discussion they have been having on a WhatsApp group about the meaning of life. They are all no older than 16! I had been peering at the computer typing away as I listened to her enthusiasm, looking up to her from time to time with a smile as she paced to and fro chatting away.

Then it struck me: "What am I doing?!". I should be paying full attention to this enthusiastic young lady talking to me so lovingly. Besides, I was breaking my code. I had decided long before they were toddlers - she and her sister - that whenever they called for my attention, I'd leave whatever it is I am doing to pay full attention and show all that love I have for them. I have, to a very large extent, been true to this code. Whenever they approached, I'd shut my laptop (I am almost always at my computer) and pay undivided attention, until tonight.

So, I stood up from my chair and away from the computers - the Mac, iPad and the Lenovo, with screens open to different views of Wealthy Affiliate - to listen. A while ago, I also decided that children are so precious, especially at the precocious age of 16 these days, that they need attention, guidance and a whole dose of love and tough love.

I listened intently to the sweet voice talking away, interspersing the narration with giggles of pleasure. And she was satisfied that daddy had listened so intently. She contently strode away, with a bounce in her gait, to let me get back to my computers. I was happy too, that I had kept to my code and listened to this angel who soon might move away from us to carve out her own life.

I was pleased for another reason: I had helped out another soul, even if it is my daughter who I must help. Hopefully, that very act of listening to her, of helping out as a listener, instills in her the value of succour, of reaching out. The returns on that investment are a thousandfold!

Thanks for stopping by to "listen" to my brief encounter with our little household intellectual and the last of its beauties!

I hope the end of your day was bright too?

Awesomeness!

Mojalefa.

Thanks Mojalefa, what a beautiful story. You remind me of how precious our children are, even if they are grown now. Sometimes everyday day life gets busy, and we tend to forget that our kids regardless of age need our love support and attention. My kids all in their twenties still seek my attention, and I in my fifties still seek my Parents (in their eighties) attention. It is a life long gift.
Have a good weekend.
Jenny

Thank you, Jenny.

As you will see in my response above to Qavavo, my sons in New York needed me all the time, even as they approached their forties! Thanks to today's technology, the distance between us - South Africa and USA - did not pose a problem.

You are so right. I have become much closer to my siblings who are left, in the absence of our parents. We do not talk often; but when we do, it is for a long time.

You have a fabulous weekend too.

That was an awesome story having children is a blessing no matter what the situation is. Every parent should be proud of what a child has accomplished from the smallest to the largest. It may not big for us as adults but as to them, it is a big deal.

Absolutely! Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post.
