English as a foreign language

First week here at WA has been amazing! I have learned so much more than I would have ever expected.

One thing what has been a bit hard for me is that I have to write, communicate and understand everything in english which is a foreign language to me. I'm taking that in a positive way tho, I can and I will improve my skills with this language 😊

I just wrote my first post to my web page which was over 1000 words. Haha it took a while 😅 but I'm kind of proud of myself!

I have always liked to speak english but the writing is so much harder! You really have to know how the language works to have more professional touch to it and check that the words are written in the right way!

I would like to hear how you have managed to improve your english language skills? What is your native language? 😊

Have great day!

Greetings from Finland,

Mira

Hello Mira,
My mother tongue is French and German. .
I learned English when I was a kid. It's a language
easy to handle compared to French, German or
even Finnish.
But yes, to speak another language it's also to
think and to put expression diffrently.
That's fine, it will allow us to improve!

Ingrid

I started to learn English when I was almost 10 years old, so 19 years ago. It has become quite easy to me but it isn't as easy than Finnish is to me, obviously :)

Mira,
Sorry honey I only know English but it is a difficult
language :(
Congratulations on completing so much that is great.
Susan

That's alright! And thank you so much :) have a great day!

I grew up in a bilingual household, Finnish and English. Took German in high school. Studied 2 years of Japanese at the college level while living in Japan. Learned a little Arabic while living in Saudi Arabia for 6 years.

I am all confused. But probably my English skills have deteriorated.

Wow! That's a lot!

I started to learn English when I was in primary school.

And as the matter of fact I studied German and Sweden also in secondary school, Russian in high school and a little bit of Spain in university of applied sciences.

Finnish and English are the languages I'm fluent with :)

I am definitely no longer fluent in Finnish if I ever was. Spent a great deal of my early time with my grandmothers, of which neither spoke English.

Did you visit sometimes here? Older people rarely knows how to speak english here in Finland.

I have not visited yet. I am probably the only one in my family that has not visited Finland to see our relatives.

If you decide to come here someday, you should come in a winter or summer. Spring and autumn can be a quit rainy sometimes. Now here is -5 degrees and a bit snow in the ground. I hope we wont have -30 degrees like last winter :D

congrats:)

Thanks!

Mira if what you have written here is an indicator of the proficiency of your English, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
Finnish would have to be one of the most difficult languages to learn as even Google has trouble translating it so I will not suggest you write it in Finnish then ask Google to translate it for you..

Finnish is really difficult language from what i have heard. I don't think so, obviously :D but I have noticed that Google translation isn't able to translate the sentences so I have to do all the work and that's good so I can learn more.

And thank you so much for your comment! I believe your native language is English, am I right?

I agree, Mira writes and I imagine she speaks better English that 90% of Americans.

Mark

I'm so overwhelmed with these kind words! Thank you!

Hi, English is a second language for me as well. I read allot of English books and that had helped me, thought the tenses are sometimes very difficult to get. Luckily WA have a good spelling and grammar program to help with that.

I agree! And I love how this learning business has been built! Thanks for your comment :) where you are from?

I am from South Africa,

Congratulations on developing your English skills to where they already are! I'm a native English speaker, and your writing seems fluent and natural. You've already come a lot further than most people who learn a foreign language. I'm sure you'll continue to refine your skills as you get more practice writing in English.

As an American, I can only speak for this group, but I think it's also true of all English speakers that we're not picky about how English is used as long as it does the job of communicating and any errors don't become overly distracting. Of course, context is important, and writing meant for publication should be as good as a writer can make it. But the message is more important than perfect delivery.

Kudos for taking on this challenge. I wish you great success in your online ventures!

Thank you so much! That means a lot to me when native English speaker says this kind of positive feedback to me!

Once again, thank you and good luck to your future with WA :)

Hi, Mira. I'm in the same boat with you. You may want to use Grammarly and Hemmingway. Those are great tools for writing. It is an opportunity to improve my English. Merry Christmas to you and all of us who celebrate it.

Thank you so much! I will check those out :) Merry Christmas to you too!

Hi Mira. Merry Christmas to you. Yes you are correct by say that writing is so much harder, if you are not a writer and a native English speaker. I'm also non-native English speaker. To spit the words out naturally never come so easy. But the thing I like is, when I think up something and write about an issue or a topic I write it constructively and it trained me toward becoming a good writer in the making.

Thanks for your reply! It takes some time to get it right to the paper but I'm already seeing some improvement in my writing :) where you are from?

I am from Papua New Guinea. Thanks.

Nice to know you! Have a great way to success :)

Thanks. Nice to know you too Mira. I'm following you back. Good luck to you at WA.

Mira you are an inspiration to me as I don't have to write in a second language and still sometimes get stuck!
Wishing you all the success you deserve!
Virginia

Thank you so much! It is quite hard sometimes but I'm pretty stubborn so I will make this work! :D
