Literally speaking, is the other way around Jill ... The received traffic volume will be influenced by your rankings and not vice versa.
And getting on the first page doesn't necessarily means a lot of traffic. You can get on the first page with a specific keyword that generates a low avg traffic volume per month.
On the other hand, more traffic means more engagement and that could give you a slight SEO boost on long term ...
