Mission Statement.

What is a mission statement? Most of us have often heard the term mentioned and probably seen it written but are we clear on exactly what it means?

The Webster dictionary defines it as what an organization is, why it exists, its reason for being. At a minimum

mission statement should define who your primary customers are, identify your products and services, and the geographical location from which you operate.

Do we know what our company’s Mission Statement is? Or do they have one, and if they do how visual is it to everyone. How well do we ourselves know it?

I work with an Insurance company and we have a mission statement. I thought I knew it well enough. Until I started writing this blog, I realize that I don’t know it at all.

My Company’s Mission Statement reads as follows:

To meet the LIFE and HEALTH INSURANCE needs of INDVIDUALS and BUSINESSES in the Caribbean and in the Americas, and to ensure FINANCIAL SECURITY and PEACE OF MIND.

Do we live up to our mission statement? I am proud to say yes we do.

What is your company’s mission statement? Do you live up to it?

Have you ever thought about how you would like your own department to strive to achieve your Company’s mission statement? Here is a suggestion:

Whoever receives a complaint from a customer should own the complaint. The person would attend to the customer’s problems until a solution is arrived at without casting blame on the colleague who first attended to the customer. The colleague could be dealt with after the customer’s departure.

What are your company’s values? What does your company stand for? Are you living up to your company’s mission statement? What is your

department aiming at? Are you there just to make the money and that’s it?

Fellow toastmaster, when I think of my mission statement I think about:

· Honesty;

· Forgiveness:

· Generosity:

· Meekness and humility;

· Modesty;

· Empowerment;

· Gracefulness and pleasantness

Essentially, my mission should be to live in peace and tranquility with myself and to pass it on to others by my actions.

Therefore, if I were to fashion a mission statement to encompass all the ideals mentioned above, it would be thus:

My purpose through each day of my life is to have an expression of commitment to love my family and friends. I plan to improve myself professionally and through education and open-mindedness so that I can advance in both my life and career in a way that I can enjoy and feel content.

I would - strive to put time aside for family and friends so that I may be able to treasure the connection I have with them while they are in my life. Attain a respected leadership role to the people around me by taking a more active role in creating initiatives and solutions to their problems, thereby helping them to grow personally, emotionally, spiritually and professionally. Would continue to strive for a healthy and long life by exercising and eating healthy.

Am I there yet? Oh No!

My dearest friends, now that I have told you what my mission statement should be, would you like the responsibility to hold me to it? Are you up to this challenge? (laugh)

In conclusion:

let us strive for a better tomorrow by individually modeling our very own Mission Statement, which would groom us towards becoming more caring, loving and productive people and a more well-rounded employees. I believe that if we could each achieve this we would be well on our way to creating a better tomorrow and ultimately a more successful and peaceful world.
