How To Discover Your Own Strengths
Have you ever wondered what makes you truly unique? Finding your strengths is like unlocking a hidden part of yourself that you can actually use every day.
But it’s not always easy to know what your strengths are—especially if you’re used to focusing on what you need to improve rather than what you’re already good at.
Here are some simple ways that I have personally found useful and, hopefully, you too can find those strengths that are just waiting to shine!
1. Start With What You Love
Take a second to think about what you enjoy doing. What do you find yourself drawn to, even when you don’t have to do it? Whether it’s helping friends, solving puzzles, or planning events, things you like doing often point to things you’re naturally good at.
If you’re always the friend people come to for advice, maybe you’re great at understanding people.
Or if you love organizing and making lists, you might be really strong in planning or detail-oriented tasks.
2. Ask People You Trust
Sometimes, others see our strengths more clearly than we do. Friends, family, or even colleagues often notice qualities in us that we overlook... Ask them!
It doesn’t have to be a big deal—just ask something like, “What do you think I’m good at?” or “When do you see me at my best?”
They might say things you’ve never thought about, or they might confirm strengths you already suspected. Either way, it’s a great way to get insight from people who know you well.
3. Think About Past Successes
Do you remember times when you felt really proud of something you did? Maybe you nailed a project at work, solved a tricky problem, or helped someone out. Think back to what you were doing then and what made you successful. Was it your creativity, your patience, or your ability to stay calm under pressure?
Those moments of success are often packed with clues about what your strengths are.
4. Pay Attention To When You Feel “In the Zone”
When you’re doing something you’re really good at, time flies by, and you don’t get tired as easily. I believe that psychologists call this “flow,” but you can think of it as being in the zone.
It’s a signal that you’re using one of your strengths. So, if you lose track of time while you’re cooking, building, writing, or whatever, that might be a big hint about one of your natural abilities.
5. Take An Online Strength Test
If you’re still unsure, there are some cool online tests you can take to give you a bit more direction.
Tools like "Clifton StrengthsFinder" (previously known as "Gallup’s StrengthsFinder") or even free options like "High 5 Test" can give you an idea of your top strengths.
These tests aren’t perfect, but they’re a fun way to get a little more clarity. They might confirm what you already know or open your eyes to new possibilities.
6. Try New Things And Be Open
Sometimes, you don’t even know you’re good at something because you’ve never tried it. If you’re curious about anything, give it a shot!
Whether it’s starting your own online business hub/website with Wealthy Affiliate, upgrading to a Premium membership, learning a new skill or taking up a new hobby, exploring new things can help you stumble upon strengths you didn’t realize you had... And who knows!? Maybe you’ll discover something totally unexpected!
Discovering Your Strengths Takes Time—And That’s Okay
Finding your strengths isn’t something you have to do overnight. It’s a journey, and it’s okay to take your time.
And remember, your strengths can grow and change as you do. So, stay curious, keep exploring, and remember to enjoy the process of getting to know yourself better.
You never know...! You might just find that you’re a lot stronger than you ever realized or even imagined. 😊
Stay strong WA fam!
