These are the observations I have experienced in the last two weeks since changes in Google's core algorithms.
- Certain niches are more volatile than others for example arts and entertainment. There seem to be certain areas that are not volatile. For example Health and fitness, technology, There are several reasons why this is so and it includes the world pandemic and algorithm changes.
- What used to be highly popular is no longer so ex, kids toys, travel (that one is obvious) art and entertainment.
- More emphasis on mobile usability by Google. For the first time in 3 months I have been contacted by Google to improve mobile usability. I have had to contact theme developers to make the relevant changes in code. And today Google have indicated that these are now fixed. Kyle discussed this in his more recent blog earlier this month.
- More emphasis on speed. Two of my sites have been affected by this change. I have used a WP plugin to clean up old files and make my sites more efficient and decrease the time it takes to load my site. I found that some codes from third party advertising was slowing my site considerably and have contact the company to work on a solution there. I have also gone back and cleaned up my media folder and Kraken optimised remaining images just in case I missed any.
- Keyword research changes for me have been to look at a wider range of phrases and keywords and testing them with various tools such as jaaxy, Microsoft Advert Keyword Research Tool, and other tools I am testing out in the market but am not confident with the outcomes yet. For the next month I will use up to 10 keywords and phrases to test, as opposed to 5 or 6 because what was popular at the beginning of the year is no longer so.
- Updating old blogs now out-of-date. This way my content is up to date and relevant. and therefore competitive with new start up sites.
I would be happy to hear how it has affected other too. Thanks, Jen
