Manaakitanga - meaning 'To nuture, look after and feed. Treat as your own children!
I and my whanau (family) have had the privilege of providing Manaakitanga to over 100 International Interns from the USA, Italy, Ireland and Britain. Although the stay was meant to be over a 3 month period with us on a Marae. The stay was shortened after approximately 6 weeks. As a host, which on my part meant cooking for these young people each night. I have enjoyed every moment. To me the Manaakitanga of these young people is the utmost rewarding and satisfying feelings. Why? Because, to see people enjoying food and feeling full and satisfied, is happiness! All else could be falling down around them, but GOOD FOOD makes them content! A full belly is a happy belly!
