A Ride Through the Night: When Silence Speaks Volumes

It was late at night, and the road stretched out like a ribbon of darkness before me. The headlights cut through the silence, revealing a lone hitchhiker standing by the side of the road, his thumb extended. Something about him seemed off, but I stopped anyway. Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was something darker.

He slid into the passenger seat without a word, and I pulled back onto the empty road. The silence was thick, only the hum of the engine breaking it. After a few minutes, he finally spoke.

"Aren’t you afraid?" he asked, his gaze fixed on the road ahead.

I glanced at him, brow furrowed. "Afraid?"

"Yes," he said, turning his head slowly toward me. "Of me."

I gave a short, humorless laugh. "Of you?"

He leaned back, a slight smirk tugging at his lips. "Picking up hitchhikers could be dangerous."

I kept my eyes on the road, repeating his words. "Picking up hitchhikers could be dangerous?"

"Yeah," he said, his voice low. "You know, I could be a serial killer."

I took a slow, deep breath, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. Then, in the calmest voice I could muster, I said, "Statistically, it’s pretty unlikely for two serial killers to meet on a lonely road at night."

The silence that followed was heavy. Unbearably heavy. And in that moment, I felt his eyes on me, studying me. Calculating.

Neither of us said another word.
