Fifteenth Month of WA - Chugging Along

Fifteenth month at WA... my progress report has certainly come in a few days late. But nonetheless, I'm glad to get back on track and talk about what's been happening.

Here's last month's post to get caught up: Fourteenth Month of WA - Really Amazon?

This month wasn't too crazy in terms of website and number growth (I kind of slacked off to be honest), but I definitely saw lots of improvements in the form of my personal development.

Let's go more in-depth with some progress and numbers.

GGAB Progress And Numbers

Good old Get Good At Badminton (GGAB), my very first blog that I created here at Wealthy Affiliate.

The changes I have made so far regarding speeding up my website and revamping my old content have benefited my website fairly well.

You can see those changes in these posts:

After speeding my website up, I saw a little bit of a rankings boost in Google and thus, a traffic increase.

Posts that were formerly on page 2 of Google have now entered page 1 and continue to climb. I am now averaging about 170 people every day compared to the 120 people from last month.

Unfortunately, the changes in speed did not create a large dramatic effect that I was expecting.

Even though I was able to boost my PageSpeed Insights scores to ~100 (varies between 99 and 100 for all pages) on desktop and ~85 on mobile compared from the previous ~85 and ~40 scores, my bounce rate did not significantly lower.

I am still experiencing over 80% bounce rate, although that score looks like it's starting to consistently decrease slowly over time.

As for making money and sales, everything dropped. Since my reapplication to Amazon Associates, I have not made a single sale and my Google Adsense decreased to an average of 5 cents per day because I removed the majority of ads cluttering my site.

Social media also dropped with the exception of Pinterest and YouTube. My Instagram dropped from 2,200 peak followers to 2,070 and my Facebook and Twitter remained stagnant.

Pinterest was interesting though as I saw my viewership jump to 13.6k from 9k only pinning a few pins in the entire month.

What I found was that implementing keyword strategies and creating rich pins have definitely improved my pins being seen and clicked through. The jump in viewership was from a bunch of rich pins that I created the month before last month.

Switching my mindset about Pinterest and viewing it primarily as a search engine rather than social media site has helped me improve my results with Pinterest.

Although Pinterest has shown improvements, the real star was YouTube.

I didn't do anything for the past few months with YouTube and never really checked it. I didn't post any videos since the first one, I didn't run any ads, nor did I go onto other channels and try to siphon subscribers and views. I almost forgot about YouTube completely...

But there were a bunch of emails that kept appearing in my inbox. "So and so has subscribed to your YouTube channel!" "So and so has liked your video!"

Huh, let's see what has been going on with my YouTube channel.

I opened up YouTube, swapped to my Get Good At Badminton account and there I saw 16k views on one video, 223 likes, and 151 subscribers.

Holy crap... that's crazy, especially since other YouTube channels I started as a kid had at max 1k views and only 20 subscribers despite having 15 different videos.

This result really shows the potential of YouTube. Had I been posting consistently like I wanted to in every single month's report here at WA, I probably would have reached the threshold needed for monetization.

Although numbers are cool and such, it's really what happened behind the scenes that are most important this month.

A Self-Development Journey

Something I have come to realize is that if you want to drastically change your income and life, you need to drastically change yourself.

To achieve success in anything, a combination of working smart and discipline is needed.

That is something that I am working towards. Creating successful habits, specifically about posting content, has been at the forefront of my personal development right now.

Something that I have often struggled with was posting consistently. I would have had a lot more success earlier had I been diligent with what I was doing.

Over the last month, something in my head changed.

The voice that said, "You can do this some other time" started fading and the voice that said, "Do it now" has grown stronger.

Now I've become more of a doer rather than a thinker. From now on, every plan I make is executed upon and my life will transform bit by bit.

There are also many ideas that were talked about a lot that finally got through into my head.

The evergreen foundation of any business is to create value. If I'm not offering any value, nobody is going to give me any money. It's a super simple idea that I skimmed over. From now on, the focus is no longer about hunting keywords or spreading my affiliate links everywhere.

There is only one thing I need to accomplish and that is helping others.

GGAB Plans And Goals

I learned a lot this month technical wise as well.

One vibe I am getting is that videos work are much more beneficial for my audience than blog posts. Teaching someone via video tutorials has also proven to be much more helpful than trying to tell them in words.

So the obvious answer is to create more videos.

But I don't want to continue making videos the way that I made my first video for Get Good At Badminton. There's a huge problem regarding copyright that I don't want to run into.

Plus the value of the video isn't that high. It's just some montage of a pro player.

Which really leaves me with one option. Do my own filming.

And that means building up my courage, getting away with using my phone, and finding time to go to a badminton court. It will be difficult as I have never done these things, but with the new shift in mindset, I will push myself to do so.

I have never tried recording personal badminton matches before so I am not sure how it will turn out. Thus, this month's goal is to experiment with what I have and find a solution that works for me.

I will also be continuing to follow the plan I created in this post: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/kevinzshan/blog/a-full-websi...

Right now, I am focused on stages step 2 and 3 where I make my old content better and make my website more user friendly.

As for posting new content, I will start posting more consistently. I will be going for a new post every 2-3 days.

I will also start creating more e-books and assets to help people get good at badminton. Then people can exchange their email address for those e-books or digital things so that I can continue to build up my existing email list.

Over time as I learn more about my niche and create more videos, I will create a full course on getting good at badminton that people can buy.

And that will eventually be my main way of monetizing my site.

Reintroduction Of Other Blogs

After reading this section, it may seem like I'm doing way too much and that I should focus on one blog at a time.

What I learned after a little bit of self-reflection is that blogging helps me get really good at whatever I am writing about.

So currently I have badminton, but I want to reintroduce my two other blogs KAZSMoney and Clear Learner so I can get better at even more topics.

I already started writing a little bit on KAZSMoney which is the blog that I created from following the Affiliate Bootcamp.

There's around 10 posts on there and I hope to increase that number.

For Clear Learner which is my education blog, I will likely hold off for a little bit as my discipline and work habits stabilize, but I will introduce it into my schedule as things get easier.

The reason I am doing this is because one, blogging has become much more enjoyable and easier to do, and two, I realized that I had, not a scarcity of time, but an abundance.

All the time I spent watching random videos are hours of time wasted and by transitioning into taking school online, I actually have way more time than I thought I did.

Writing daily on Medium (which is where I write more about my personal journeys) has also shown me what I am able to accomplish. I have almost turned the action of posting an article on Medium everyday into an habit like brushing my teeth.

It takes me, at most, 2 hours to write a 1,500 word article and that time is going down with every new article that goes out. As I continue to practice, I can only get faster.

Of course, if you're reading this and thinking about how you can learn from what I am doing, I wouldn't necessarily recommend following what I am doing. Sticking and focusing on one blog still remains the fastest way to start earning money.

But for me, it has stopped being so much about the money but more on the idea of self-improvement and helping others.

The goal of this month is to create a writing and posting schedule that I can consistently follow. Eventually, it will become a habit that I will follow as naturally as brushing my teeth.

Heading Off For Now

That's about it for this month's report! I will continue to provide updates as I see fit, but for now, I'll be off to go do what I need to do.

You are doing really well Kevin.
I have a few blogs but I find that I focus for a while on each one in turn, it saves me from sitting there wondering what to write.
Writing posts on other subjects often sparks ideas for the other ones.

Yep! That's another great reason for me to add. I always find it easier to blog on multiple sites as it builds ideas faster.

Great job! Looking forward to reaching these milestones myself. Thanks for sharing! Christine

Thank you for commenting! Wish you luck on reaching those milestones too :)

Fantastic. I always enjoy reading your updates.

Thank you!

Awesome Kevin 1500 words in 2 hours, something for me to strive for, as they say practise makes things easier and better, and also more sites, thats awesome Kevin

yes happy blogging :)

Erika

Yep, and only a year ago, I was struggling to even put out 500 words in an article. The growth will come and you will see improvements!

Major Effort Kevin, yes practise and perseverance is the path, very happy for you Kevin, well done :)

Erika

I loved reading about your progress and your plans. You know yourself really well. I like how you think and you know what you need to do. Thanks for sharing. :)

Paula

And thanks for commenting! I'd say self-awareness is one of the things I'm best at :)

Pretty interesting and fantastic stuff. It's always easy to look back on some things and say "if only" --I would've been monetized. conversely, it could just have easily been the exact opposite. I believe that things ultimately happen when they're supposed to! Great Job, Kevin!

Jeff

Yeah I definitely talk about "if only" too much. It's all about what's next and not what has passed. Great info!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks!

Way to persevere Kevin,

Great analysis of your progress. Keep on keeping on.

Telex.

Thank you! Good day to you too :)

Tremendous!

"The evergreen foundation of any business is to create value. If I'm not offering any value, nobody is going to give me any money"

What a quote!

I'd add

"Or visit my site and turn into a regular reader".

Which brings me to point out...

Why are there certain blogs and sites that we visit regularly?

Because they provide us with value!.

Yep, ultimately, if I want more people to read and comeback to my site, I just have to give them more value. Spot on!
