Top 5 Reasons to Work from Home

Last Update: July 19, 2016

Most of you here at Wealthy Affiliate already know they are some great benefits to working from home and that's why we are all hoping to make this a full time occupation. But have you ever thought about all the things you stand to gain when you have a home office, and can finally tell your '9-5' boss where to shove his job? :)

  • The average person commutes around 18 miles to and from work, taking around 1/2 an hour per journey. That's five hours per week stuck in a car when you could be working, and just think how much money you could save in gas!
  • You tend to take less sick days - when someone else is paying your wages and you feel a little rough, then the temptation is to stay at home. But when you are responsible for your own earnings, you tend to be far more productive.
  • We all know that stress is detrimental to health and people who work from home tend to suffer a lot less.
  • Although it's important to get into the right frame of mind for working, (take a shower, clothes, hair and make-up - if appropriate!) you don't have to work in a pants suit or smart clothing. It's very hot here in the UK at the moment and when I see those bankers in shirt and tie, I could weep for them!
  • Extra free time for family. When you seem to spend half of your life commuting, you tend to miss out on all sorts of important family times. When did you last manage to get to your child's sports day or attend a concert? When you work from home you can make sure to schedule your time so that you can get to these events.

I'm sure that many of you can think of other reasons to work from home - what's your motivation? Please leave a comment below :)

Ciao for now my lovelies,

I totally agree with you! If I did not have to work full time right now I would continue to work from home! This summer has been so nice, but Monday I start back to work again teaching preschool!

Totally agree! even if starting your own business from home will need a lot of work, you can do it at your own peace, work after your kids go to bed or when they are in school... share with them more time is a plus... you don't have to drive every day long hours into a traffic jam, etc.

Today, things that I do on the Internet (like aff marketing) I have to do it as a part-time job but I hope that soon, it will be a full-time job.

While starting your business it will take a lot of work and many long days, that you can breakup as you see fit.

My reason for working from home is the daily grind, I find it so mundane and repetitive it's like slow torture! Working from home is freedom, self sufficiency, even if you only made minimum wage from home, you'd still be quids in by saving on expenses.

There are so many reasons why it's so great to work from home. I love the fact that I don't have to fight through traffic in the morning and get so stressed before the day even starts.

Hey Jude dear, awesome post as usuall!! I don't like traveling on the road especially if stuck in a bad traffic jam. :(. But thank God our office is very near our house, only 5 mins walk!! I can't complain, I think I am blessed!! Have a great day. :))

It is a great lifestyle. I certainly don't miss the commute to D.C. Worst in the US next to Los Angeles.

that's what I used to really dislike Mike. I worked in the centre of a city around 20 miles away from my home and while that isn't a huge distance, it was more about the time spent stuck in traffic. I also had to leave home extra early to guarantee getting a parking space. Now my commute is 30 seconds from bedroom to work lol :)

About the same for me. Faster when in exercise mode Jude. Thanks.

Other reasons to work from home..

- To be the Boss of myself!
- Flexible working hours, sometimes I feel my 9-5 job needs 4 hours of work instead of 8! I can easily do it in 3-4 hours, thus I feel I'm wasting my life in a 9-5 job!
- Feeling independent, thus more creative, active, to make a difference.

Hi Jude
great post. I am also sick of working hard for someone from 9-5. They the one who make money. The beauty of work for yourself, in comfort from your home, is that you work hard and you make more money. In a regular job you work hard but no extra money.
Thanx
Raj

I do work from home, but I work a full work day. And sometimes, it can be just as stressful. My goal is to turn my full-time job into a part-time job so I can actually quit sometime soon! Thank you for sharing!

I've always worked in town, but theres always been lots of people who work on the coal mines 80 to 100 miles away. That's a lot of driving every day.
Reply
JudeP Premium
Oh goodness me, I wouldn't want to be doing that commute! :)
Reply
jimcarlsen65 Premium
Me neither. Things are a bit different here. The next nearest town to us is 35 miles, then the next is 70 miles. But there's a lot of deer, antelope and cows in between.

So true in all that you say Jude! The fact that I can do what I do from the comfort of my home, is what drives me to work on achieving all that I dream of in my online business.

I still say, continuing my thoughts from yesterday that you still have it a bit easy in the U.K. at the moment regarding your weather compared to where I live. Down here in North Carolina where I live the temps, (already in the low/mid 90s every day since last week) are supposed to climb up to or above 100 degrees by the weekend. That's not dry the type of dry heat/low humidity conditions found in the deserts of Nevada or Arizona either. We have high humidity, (dew points often climbing well into the mid 70s) which only makes it feel hotter than it already is!

If you don't have air conditioning here then it would be almost unbearable.

Stay cool meanwhile in the U.K. - or as much as you can, Jude!
Jeff

Air con is almost unheard-of in normal homes in the UK, lol but I feel in need of it today! I can't imagine how you must feel, day in, day out. Take good care of yourself and keep well-hydrated :)

Nice post Jude

The major reason for me is that working from home allows me to organize my work around my life instead of trying to organize my life around my work!

For me that's flexibility And freedom.
And I can manage my life threefold than getting a job and work for somebody else who is not even happy for him.(I'm not against any job).

Online is the opportunity of having the life that everyone would dream of.

Being a young man (22) and having the ability to work online is amazing. I can do what I want when I want but I must admit I do find myself out a lot more then being at home.

I'm that active type who loves to be out and about. The ability to take my computer with me is the best part because I can work where I want.

I've worked in parks in the city centre, in coffee shops, in pubs, at college and even when on vacation.

I love being around other people and I love the fact that in two hours I can build a business while everyone around me looks at me with interest wanting to know how I do it.

Life sure is good when you're the boss of your own life especially if you like to study other trades like stock trading for me.

Thanks for the post Jude.

Sam.

Working from home is great. However, we need people to be at their 9-5 jobs. If everybody starts working from home, the economy would be in trouble.

I'm going to love being able to work when I'M most productive, at night. All of my ideas come rushing to my head right when I need to be going to sleep for my day job. My day job also makes me feel so burnt out, that even though I have ideas, they're are a jumbled mess by the time I sit in front of my computer. I want to be able to write from like 10pm to 3am if I feel like it, but when I know I have to be up at 5am...work wins again. Another thing, is being able to take vacation when I want...and maybe even still write from my vacation spot! I mean hey, if you love what you do, how can it take away from your enjoyment? Great post! Feeling motivated now! All of your reasons are so good. I can't wait to be able to completely work from home.

I took my laptop to Italy last time I went and worked every day! There's always a time when everyone wants half hour to rest and do nothing and that's when I write :)

You do have to be disciplined, that is the BIG issue with working from home. It is too easy to go out and have a coffee, or do some gardening or whatever it is that takes your fancy!

HI Jude, I like the freedom, for the most part to be able to do and go wherever you want to and need to, when you need. Obviously, that has some limitations based on your work and the time you need to be focused working but that freedom is definitely one of the perks. Thanks for sharing.
