I've got 200 followers as of today. That's a really motivating fact, because I know that every blog post I put out there will be seen by plenty of people. I might link to some other articles or websites within that, to provide access to more information for readers.
Everything gets sense when you get an audience. Just as in music, it's the same way in this - if you have a message or some other type of value you want to let people know, you have to find a way to get it to them.
Building following on social on various networks is a great way to do that. We might be uncertain of getting many people we don't personally know to follow us, our thoughts, our approaches, our mindsets... But that's the right way to go. I got so much value from people's insight and feedback. It's motivating and telling me what I'm doing good or bad.
There are many reasons for why you should be building your network, but you'll understand them a lot more when you actually start doing it. Start making connections, and even friendships. Everyone will come handy one way or another, sooner or later.
Perhaps others blog or comment will be a click that will change the way you think about certain things.
I challenge you to get 400 followers before I do! And I can't wait to get them, because the benefit will be mutual! ;)
