I'm currently in the process of self-publishing my first e-book. It's called '(Overcome) The Arpeggio World', and it's an instructional book for guitarists, presenting various approaches and example of using arpeggio phrasing in guitar playing.
I actually finished the e-book almost 2 years ago, and was reluctant to publish it until now for various reasons, but I'd never think I'd have problems with it I'm having now.
Amazon has several services I'm using for self-publishing. One is Amazon Kindle. It offers excellent way to publish and even promote your e-book for Kindle, and the deal is good in financial terms. The only problem I experienced occured when the e-book got almost live. The formatting totally changed, and it destroyed everything. :)
The e-book was written in MS Word. It has plenty of tables, which got displayed simply as 'rows', without columns. That ruined the look of everything. Many of other format issues happened. I wish I only knew about this, so I could prevent this from happening. I'm still finding ways to solve some these issues, but, even if I don't manage to do it, I'll still have a PDF version of it that looks excellent, and will sell it through my site.
If you're about to write an e-book, definitely find out everything you can about THE FORMAT YOU'RE ABOUT TO PUBLISHING IT in, before you do anything.
Another thing I should mention is 'image resolution'. I have plenty of image exercises examples in the e-book. I didn't know they should be 300 dpi resolution for paperback version. Images might get blurry otherwise. Thanks to God that these images I use aren't all that difficult and color heavy, so there aren't much problems with this. But, have the image resolution in mind also!
