Setting Global Colors and Fonts

Published on Wealthy Affiliate — a platform for building real online businesses with modern training and AI.
This is the step that instantly makes a beginner’s website look cleaner, more professional, and far easier to manage. Modern WordPress themes use global styling. That means you choose your colors and fonts once, and your entire site follows those choices automatically.
Without this step, beginners spend hours fixing individual blocks, wondering why nothing matches. With this step, everything becomes simple.
Follow these steps, and your whole site will look consistent from the start.
Step 1: Open the Customizer
Go to Appearance → Customize.
This is where GeneratePress controls live.
Step 2: Go to Colors
Inside the customizer, select Colors.
You will see your global palette.
These are the only colors you need to control right now.
Step 3: Choose a Simple Color Palette
Beginners should use 3 main colors:
• One dark color for text
• One accent color for buttons
• One light color for backgrounds
Don’t chase perfect design. Keep it clean.
Example beginner palette:
• Text: #222222
• Accent: #0073e6
• Background: #ffffff
Click Publish when done.

Step 4: Open Typography Settings
Go back in the Customizer and choose Typography.
GeneratePress lets you set fonts for your entire site.
Step 5: Choose Easy-to-Read Fonts
Pick clean, readable fonts that work well on all devices.
Recommended beginner fonts:
• Headings: Montserrat, Poppins, or Lato
• Body text: Open Sans, Lato, or Roboto
Avoid decorative fonts. They make things messy fast.
Step 6: Set Your Font Sizes
Inside Typography, set:
• Body text: 16–18 px
• Headings: Leave them default for now
These sizes work for most screens and keep your site readable.
Step 7: Apply These Settings Globally
Make sure you apply your chosen fonts to:
• Body
• Headings
• Buttons
• Navigation
Everything should use a consistent style.
Step 8: Preview Your Site
Click the eye icon to preview your site.
You should now see a clean, modern look — before adding a single block.
Step 9: Publish Your Settings
Click Publish to save everything.
Step 10: Understand Why This Matters
Global styling saves beginners from endless design mistakes.
It:
• keeps your site consistent
• boosts readability
• makes page-building easier
• reduces block-by-block editing
• helps you avoid design overwhelm
This is the foundation that lets everything feel simpler later.
Your entire website now follows the colors and fonts you set. That means you can focus on learning layouts instead of fighting design.
In the next post, we move into the heart of modern WordPress: understanding blocks, containers, rows, and grids so beginners know how their pages actually work.
