Yesterday, I drove down to Seattle to meet a transport coming up from Los Angeles.
Kai came north with Wiggly Butts Transport — an extended van full of Shepherds and a few other souls heading to new homes along the Pacific Coast.
When I arrived, there were probably fifteen dogs inside.
Beautiful German Shepherds.
A Shar-Pei.
A couple of little mixed breeds.
Families waiting.
Some nervous. Some excited.
All hopeful.
Of all the Shepherds stepping out of that van, he was the only long-haired one.
I was one of the last to collect him.
Most adopters were from Seattle.
I was the one crossing back to Vancouver.
When they brought Kai out, I did what I always do — I reached to touch him.
He told me no.
Fair enough.
Respect is given first.
Nine weeks ago, I saw him on Westside German Shepherd Rescue’s page. I didn’t inquire then. Anyone who knows Westside knows they hold their dogs for at least two months before adoption. They stabilize them. Evaluate them. Protect them.
A couple of weeks ago, on my wife’s birthday, we submitted the application.
Robin, the founder — who already knew us from Bishop — saw our name on the pending list.
That was it.

There were other applicants.
But this little man was coming home to us.
And here’s the part that matters to me.
It’s almost six years to the day that we brought Bishop home from Westside.
March 4, 2020.
Bishop flew to us.
Kai crossed the border with me.
Different journey.
Same heartbeat.
He’s not rushing us.
He eats.
He watches.
He tracks every doorway like a Shepherd should.
Tanner is doing his quiet mentoring.
Sassy gave him seven hours before beginning her formal evaluation.
Nothing here is forced.
Nothing ever is.

It’s funny — the most important things I’ve learned over the last sixteen-plus years didn’t come from business books.
They came from dogs like this.
Patience.
Structure.
Consistency.
Trust is earned slowly.
There are no shortcuts.
Wealthy Affiliate gave me the framework to build Fluffy Shepherds.
But the discipline behind it?
That part was learned long before I ever built a website.
Fluffy Shepherds has never been an idea.
It’s been lived.
The long stretches of patience.
The hard goodbyes.
The careful beginnings.
Yesterday, we added another chapter.
And in this house, chapters aren’t written quickly — they’re lived fully.
One more heartbeat in the house.
Welcome home, Kai.
