The Faster AI Gets, the More Deliberate I Need to Be

Speed can remove the work. It can also remove the moments when I used to stop and think.

AI saves time. That is one of the main reasons I use it.

Tasks that once took an hour can now take minutes. Research, organizing information, first drafts, images, comparisons, and other work can happen much faster than they used to.

I like that.

I do not see any reason to make work slower just because that is how we used to have to do it.

But lately I have started wondering whether every minute saved should automatically become another minute of production.

More importantly:

What happens to the thinking that used to occur while I was doing the work?

Some Friction Really Was Just Friction

Some of the work AI can remove really was just friction.

Repetitive formatting.

Organizing information.

First-pass research.

Sorting data.

Routine website changes.

Mechanical editing.

There is no need to romanticize slow work just because we used to have to do it manually.

AI removing unnecessary labor is a real benefit.

I want that benefit.

But not all friction was wasted.

Some of the Work Made Me Think

While doing something manually, I often noticed things along the way.

I reconsidered wording.

I spotted inconsistencies.

I asked whether an idea actually worked.

I learned how the process functioned.

Sometimes I changed direction before I reached the end.

The work itself created natural stopping points.

If something that used to take two hours now takes two minutes, I do not automatically get those two hours of exposure to the problem.

That does not mean I need to spend two hours on it anyway.

It does mean some of the thinking that used to happen naturally may no longer happen unless I deliberately put it back.

A polished result can arrive before I have had time to decide whether it is the right result.

Put the Judgment Back In

I do not think the answer is to artificially slow AI down.

Instead, I think I need to deliberately reinsert the judgment that used to happen naturally.

When AI brings something back to me, I need to stop and ask:

Is this accurate?

Is this what I actually meant?

Does it fit the audience?

What assumptions did the AI make?

What is missing?

What could go wrong?

Should this even be published or acted on?

AI can bring the work to the checkpoint.

I still need to decide whether it crosses.

The speed can belong to the tool.

The judgment still belongs to me.

The Beginner Problem May Be Changing

Before AI, a beginner often had to ask:

“How do I do this?”

How do I research a keyword?

How do I write an article?

How do I build a website?

How do I create an image?

How do I organize all of this?

AI can answer many of those questions now and sometimes do much of the work.

So the question may increasingly become:

“How do I know whether what was done is good?”

Beginners can move much faster now.

That is good.

But they may also bypass some of the repetition that used to teach people what a good result looked like.

I am not saying beginners should do everything manually.

I am saying they still need enough understanding to judge, question, and verify what AI gives them.

A polished answer can still be wrong.

A professional-looking image can still communicate the wrong thing.

A well-written article can still miss the point.

And something that sounds like me can still contain reasoning that was never really mine.

The Productivity Trap

AI gives time back.

The easy response is to fill that saved time with more output.

More articles.

More graphics.

More pages.

More posts.

More everything.

But volume is not automatically better.

The question I keep coming back to is:

If AI saves me 90% of the time, what am I going to do with the 90% it gave back?

Am I just going to produce ten times as much?

Maybe sometimes.

But if every saved minute becomes another minute of production, I may just become a faster version of the same overloaded person.

Maybe some of that saved time should go into other things.

Verify facts.

Improve the idea.

Add personal experience.

Think about the reader.

Compare alternatives.

Question assumptions.

Decide whether something needs to exist at all.

Occasionally choose not to publish.

Maybe some of the saved time should not go back into the business at all.

The goal is not merely to produce faster.

It is to use some of that speed to create room for better judgment.

Faster AI Does Not Make Judgment Less Important

AI getting faster does not make human judgment less important.

It may make deliberate judgment more important because some of the old pauses are disappearing.

I use AI a lot, and I expect I will use it even more as the tools improve.

I want the speed.

I want the time savings.

I want AI to remove unnecessary work.

I just do not want it to remove the part where I think about what I am doing.

I want AI to save me time. I just do not want it to save me so much time that I stop thinking about what I am doing with it.
