Legacy Over Likes: What a Prairie Farmer Taught Me About Building a Business That Matters

This one’s a little different.
Today, I’m not sharing a productivity tip, SEO trick, or a new AI tool. I’m sharing the story of someone you’ve never met—but someone who taught me more about business and life than most marketing courses ever could.
His name was Jerry Silzer.
He passed away last week at 82 years old.
Now, you won’t find Jerry inside WA, or on YouTube, or running TikTok funnels. He didn’t care about clicks or conversions. We worked together for 7 years—building, fixing, farming—and in that time, Jerry became like a second dad to me. Our families were close. We shared stories, hard work, and laughter over coffee and cattle gates. He was the kind of man who’d drop what he was doing to help someone patch a fence or clean a load of grain—and somehow never expected a thing in return.
So why am I telling you, a bunch of affiliate marketers, about an old Saskatchewan farmer?

Because Jerry embodied every principle of what makes an affiliate business actually work—without ever using the word “affiliate.”
Here’s how:
✅ He was consistent, reliable, and trusted.
His grain cleaning business served clients across half the province. Not because he advertised, but because word got around: Jerry shows up, does the job right, and treats people like family. Isn’t that what we’re aiming for with every blog, email, or video we put out?
✅ He niched down with laser focus.
Jerry didn’t try to serve everyone—he served a specific group with a specific need. Grain farmers who needed clean, quality seed before planting. That’s niching 101, right? Serve the right people deeply.
✅ He understood service before sales.
He gave freely. His time, his knowledge, his tools. That built loyalty that no marketing budget could buy. When we lead with value in affiliate marketing—really lead with value—we’re building that same kind of trust.
✅ He left a legacy, not just a job.
Over 100 foster kids came through his home. He volunteered for the Lions Club, built homes, repaired the local campground, and even played Santa every year. It wasn’t about money. It was about impact. If your online business isn’t leading toward legacy… what are we even doing it for?
I’ll be tuning in to his funeral livestream today with a heavy heart—but also a deep sense of gratitude. Because guys like Jerry? They don’t teach affiliate marketing… but they sure teach you how to live like a real affiliate should.
So wherever you are in your journey—newbie, mid-tier, or seasoned pro—remember that people like Jerry are the blueprint. Show up, serve others, specialize, and leave something behind that matters.
Thanks for letting me share this.
Rest easy, Jerry. You were never part of WA… but I’m pretty sure we could’ve made you a hell of an ambassador.
