Use Another Article Directory?

I signed up for an account a long time ago (I think -- I know), but didn't record the information. Now I can't log in or create a new account, because Ezine already has my name registered, but it's not under any of my email addresses. I honestly can't imagine what magic email address I would use to register an account with Ezine. I honestly can't imagine why I would.
Anyway, this brings me to my main question, which is: does using various article directories to obtain backlinks for your site improve your SEO in any way, or is sticking to Street Articles fine? Every other directory I've tried has presented some kind of problem with registration and I'm too young to be losing hairs over this.
In other news, StumbleUpon netted me 114 new visitors to my site yesterday, which is the highest I've ever seen. Sadly there was no site interaction whatsoever, which is disconcerting. There's more experimentation needed afoot.
