A lesson learned

I’ve lived a good life and had my share of wins, but if I could roll the clock back, there’s one thing I’d change. Funny thing is, most truly successful people — with one notable exception — already do this instinctively. It’s not taught in school, you won’t hear it in university lectures, and hardly anyone talks about it. Yet if you adopt it, your whole life shifts for the better and stays that way.

It’s specializing. Becoming the person who knows one thing better than the flock. That’s where the real success hides.

Look at medical specialists. Heart, brain, bones, skin, bowel, stomach — they don’t dabble in all of them. They pick one lane and dominate it. And they reap the rewards.

Me? I became the classic jack‑of‑all‑trades. A bit of knowledge here, a bit there, but never the deep dive. My daughter and I both got interested in marketing and later AI. I skimmed enough to get by. She went all in. I’m still plodding along, and she’s landing top‑tier marketing roles with salaries anyone would envy.

Tradespeople fall into this trap too. They learn a trade that suits their lifestyle, but they stay on award wages for life. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Amazon, Warren Buffett — they never drifted from their core mission. And then there’s Elon Musk, the exception. He jumps around, but every jump still feeds his end game: Mars. Tesla, X, Grok, Starlink, SpaceX — they’re all cashflow engines for the bigger picture. Sure, he’s dropped a few balls, but he puts competent management in place and keeps moving.

When he decided he wanted to go to space, he flew to Russia to buy a rocket. They basically laughed him off as a pretender. On the flight home, feeling defeated, he had the thought that changed everything: “I’ll build my own rocket.” And he did — to the point where he now knows more about rockets than anyone alive.

Another example: Wealthy Affiliate. Kyle and Carson have stayed laser‑focused on one product for twenty years. Hosting, training, internet marketing, AI, image production — all built around one core mission. They didn’t wander. They specialized.

I could list more, but honestly, looking back at my own history of “almost getting it right” gets a bit depressing. My success came from surrounding myself with good people — people who mastered their lane while I skimmed across the surface.
