The Right Way To Face Your Problems

You may feel related to one or more of these situations: the long exhausting hours at the office without enough recognition or lower pay than what you deserve; the overwhelming debt between credit cards, a mortgage, student loans, health-care and everyday expenses; arguments with your family, coworkers or friends; weight or health problems that keep our energy and motivation low. Does it ring a bell?

The struggles you face are shared with millions of people around the world. Some may be bigger than others, but problems are an unavoidable reality that will appear at many phases in your life. However, what you can obtain from them depends on your perspective.

We have been trained throughout our lives to see our problems as the difficult, sad and tiresome obstacles that stand between us and happiness. Often we feel defeated by them and worried or anxious about whether we will be able to overcome them. This means we have been looking at our problems the wrong way all along, instead of acknowledging what they really are: opportunities to grow.

Does it sound too optimistic? It isn’t. It is rather a surprisingly realistic approach. Take as an example a hard workout routine at the gym: all that exercise, weights and push-ups are part of the routine with the purpose of making you better and stronger. Of course it will be hard, especially at the beginning, but if you manage to push through that pain and exhaustion and decide not to give up, you will definitely be much stronger and have better physical condition after certain time has passed. In the end, it was worth the effort, wasn’t it?

All problems will test your resilience and endurance. They will be hard and at some point you may want to stop fighting, but if you go on despite that feeling, eventually you will find a solution to such problems and will be able to leave them behind, with valuable lessons that you will have learned for other situations in the future. Those lessons are the true purpose of the opportunities that you encounter as daily problems: it’s not about solving the problem, but about the value it will bring to your life… Just like the point of working out is not just finishing the routine per se, but the future outcome of it.

Your attitude makes the difference

It may seem like a cliché, but the perspective you have on these situations will make all the difference between making it and getting choked by your problems. Switching to the right attitude is an incredibly empowering move.

Stop hiding – avoidance only makes matters pile up and get worse. Don’t let your problems get bigger by not addressing them. Start with the easiest problems and work your way up. You’ll feel better as you start conquering every little challenge. Even the most tiresome problems to take care of are a great opportunity to succeed.

The most important part of all is that you remember problem solving is making you stronger. Just like training: the more you work on it, the better you will get. You will find yourself more resourceful and confident towards the new situations that come your way, to the point where some of them won’t even be considered as problems anymore. Be grateful for all the opportunities to improve, and face them with your best attitude.
