Dog in My Profile Picture

Throughout my time here as a member of WA, have received a number of compliments on the dog in my profile picture. For the record, his name was Cooper, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It is with a most heavy heart that I must inform my fellow members, especially the dog lovers out there, that I had to say goodbye forever to my little fur buddy last week. This is why I have been missing in action as of late.

COOPER
I don't usually think of this platform as the place to bring my personal life into my blog posts, but I'm breaking my rule tonight because right now, it's just therapy for me to write about this. That said, I'm not even sure how I feel. Mostly numb I guess. This is the first time in about 20 years without a dog, and I'm feeling the void.

When I moved back to my hometown of Philadelphia in 2005, I had a little Cocker Spaniel mix named Joey (named after Joe Cocker). He was about 6 years old at the time. I was feeling as if Joey could use some company since the move may have been a bit of a trauma for him, As fate would have it, within a week of having this thought, I was walking Little Joe and we happened across a young lady with a young puppy on a leash, patiently waiting for it to stop going in circles and do his "business". I asked her if it was a cocker Spaniel.

She said, "No. It's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Want one?" I said, "A what?" She repeated, "A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Would you like one?"

COOP and JOE

I asked, "Him? Or are there other puppies". Turned out she bought him, and her landlord wouldn't let her keep him. I took her number and told her I'd think it over and let her know. As soon as I got home, I Googled "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel". Turns out, they are a very sought after and expensive breed of dog. Known for there exceptionally friendly personality and good looks. I called her, we met and she handed Cooper over to me with all of his papers, a crate, a bag of food, and some treats. I didn't have much money at the time, and I wasn't expecting to be acquiring a puppy all of the sudden, but I knew she had just spent a lot of money on him and even though she didn't ask for anything in return, I gave her a hundred dollars. It was the best hundred dollars I ever spent in my life.

Cooper and Joey were inseparable till the day Joey died. After that, it was just me and Cooper. About two weeks later I got a little mixed-breed named Keegan to keep Cooper company. Keegan was an older dog when I adopted him and in time, he went over the to the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, too. So until last week, it was just Coop and me.

COOPER and KEEGAN

And now, it's just me. And I'm just writing this because it's therapeutic. I'm missing all of my little fur buddies tonight. Joey, Keegan and now Cooper.

I may get a new dog eventually, but for now, I need to take some time to grieve and go through this process or whatever it is. I feel sad not having a little furry friend to greet me when I come home from work, shopping or visiting friends. Hopefully, sometime down the road you'll see a new photo of me with a new...

dog in my profile picture.

So sorry to read of your loss. Dogs are such faithful creatures, so I know how you feel. Yes its good to grieve to relieve yourself of the sadness, and bounce back again. After this physical earth is meant to be a temporary place of abode for all of us, both man and animals. The wise one once said 'Physical death is the end of all, let the living take this to heart'.

Hi, just want to reach out and give you my support so sorry for your loss you have given them a beautiful life and it is indeed very smart to wait until you have processed the lost of Joey, Keegan and now Cooper. I'm very sure they where very happy with you as their owner I know how it feels so if you need a listening ear I'm always there
take care

Hope

My sincere condolences. I am a cat person who adores dogs. Losing a pet is losing a member of the family. So it is smart to take time to grieve. It never gets easier to lose them. When you are ready the right dog, or dogs will come to you.

Good afternoon Hal,

I know how you feel as during the 36 years here on my farm I had a lot of furry friends keeping company.
When my fiance died in 1982 and I would come home after work to a cold and dark house my animals were there to greet me. I don't know what I would have done without them, they kept me alive one could say.
I am looking forward to soon see a new friend of yours on your profile photo.

All the best, Taetske

My condolences to you Hal. I know how you feel. It is so sad to lose a beloved pet. My daughter lost her beautiful Schnauzer just 4 weeks ago. Our pets our part of us and they can never be replaced. You need time to grieve and when the pain becomes less I hope you will have another beautiful dog to enjoy.
Sending you kind thoughts.

Really sorry for your loss. It's awful losing a dog and you don't really get the time to grieve. The brown and white dog in my profile picture died 19th September 2015. I was devastated too.
Thankyou for sharing your memories. Eventually I'm sure there will be another dog in your life.

We well understand and empathize....losing our fur family members is a space only a pet owner knows. Sorry for your loss and am glad you put it so well in writing...it brought back a flood of feelings and memories...good memories. Yes we can have several...but each is unique and special. Sorry for your loss.

It's so hard when we lose a pet, they are a part of our family and a big part of our lives. I lost the cat in my photo over a year ago and I still miss her dearly. Take the time you need to grieve and you will know when the time is right to get a new fur baby. I'll keep a look out for your new profile picture!

I was so sad to hear your news, Hal, as I have 2 little furbabies also. I was told from a child to always remember when you have Livestock one must be prepared to say goodbye to them at some stage. Wishing you lots of comfort as it never gets easier!

I'm really sorry to hear this. Some of my best friends in my life have been the dogs I have been fortunate enough to grow up with. Even my first dog, whom I lost to old age nearly 30 years ago, pops into my mind with some frequency. I still have a lock of his fur.

Dogs ask very little from us, but they leave us with so much.
