What are other critical things to look for in a theme other than page builders and site speed?

Ultimately we all want the site that's running smoothly and is SEO-friendly right !, above all the site that offers the audience a good experience in order for us to retain them for long term and the rest is history.

Thanks....

Maggie

site speed and mobile friendly apprear to be the most important things to google at the moment....
good user interface - easy navigation - indepth information- answers to their problems are the bits for the visitors....and speed of site and readable on a mobile......
so a not cluttered site ( mobiles have a small screen)
clear menu structure - they need to find other information
good internal linking
i would still go for astra or generatepress or oceanwp as three lightweight and fast themes capable of being moulded into most niches....
visitors are after answers to their problems...so a plain site with the answer they want will do most....
good luck with your selection

Awesome, I'm currently changing themes I was doing the comparison between those themes you've mentioned including Neve and their pricing structure although I'll go for a free theme at this point and will upgrade later.

Astra seems to have caught my attention.
Thanks for your input, Feigner.

astra have been a bit naughty recently and may not be in the wordpress repository - but are still updating their theme ...
i stil use it and wil lcontinue to use it as it seems a very good theme
combine this with a plugin like site origin css and you can change most things on your site for free....
remember as your site ages to try out new themes in a test site - there are plugins that will create dummy content to show you what it looks like....
with astra you can install the theme pack plugin and see what can be achieved with page builders - even the block editor.....
always useful to test it before committing to your main site - and remember to take a backup just in case....

Yes, I was really interested in the theme especially since I heard good things about this it.

Now that it has been reinstated although delisted as one of the popular themes, it seems, as you've also highlighted that it will continue to be updated.

It doesn't seem like those who already employ the theme have much to worry about since the theme will continue operating, however, I wonder if its a good move on my part to make the switch after this scandal.

Whats you're your take on this?

i would say they have learnt their lesson - adding affiliate links within the theme is not a good idea - and i din't think they will do it again.
personally i have stayed with them and will continue to do so until they stop- which i hope is a long time away....

Hi Feigner
I would like to view your site and see the layout of your theme-Astra and other things, if you dont mind.

I was just doing the test driving to familiarize myself with the theme before I can switch themes.

I hope this doesn't bother you.

Thanks in advance

Maggie

the latest one i have used this for is filsphilosophies.stan-tech.com
i used one of the starter templates
it is just a site for random things i have done and feel that others will find interesting

Ok great. I see your site is powered by generatePress. Do you have a site that is powered by Astra...that's the one I was test-driving...I just want to see how it looks like in a real-life situation...?

sorry - i tend to play with themes - it is now powered by astra - so you can see that it really makes little difference
but for the standard site i would go for astra free with more customization.

I see. I'm sorry for too many questions. I have to ask. Did you install Astra on an already existing site, more like changing themes? Did you ever have an incident in which your existing content was overwritten in the process of importing the template(s) to your site? How did you resolve the issue?

you can install another tamplate on an existing site
your content is safe
what might change and need a bit of work is the header image menus and anything styled by the theme - so be prepared for it
what you could do is to make a complete bckup from the allinone wp migration tool then add that to a test site and change the theme - see what happens so you are prepared on your main site

Ok Thanks. That's what I've anticipated....the widget, menu and customisation, that they will be affected by the theme change. Atleast the content is safe, does this include comments as well?

I did install updraft plus...but because there was not much work done on the test site...it was not impacted by the change of themes.

I guess I will just take the plunge as long as the site is backed up.

Thanks for the heads up

all the comments will stay intact - this is treated the same as articles
most should be ok but there will always be a little bit of adjustment
good luck with the update

Is it extremely light, fast, well coded, SEO optimized, flexible, customizable, adaptable and translation ready. More important responsive i.e. mobile friendly.

Great stuff, thanks Abie. Among other things, astra is said to be lightweight, less than 50KB, if Im not mistaken.

Thanks for your input.

Hi, I don't use Astra, I have GeneratePress Premium & Divi full version. Also Elementor free version for now.

Elementor and GP premium work well together.

Thanks for the heads up. I've already asked the next question about Astra on another thread, thanks for covering that up here.

I'm glad I asked this question before switching themes...
