I've gotten some feedback from several friends that I should try to sell my photography, I'm definitely interested in doing that as a sub-niche for my main niche. My main niche is The Everett and Austin Project.

Has anybody tried selling their photography before? Have you had any success? Have you done it using a wordpress website? Have you used any of the WA principles to market it? Is there a wordpress plugin that you recommend?

I did a simple add plugin search on my web site dashboard and found that the most popular plugin and oldest and most supported plugin for selling photography is "WordPress Gallery Plugin – NextGEN Gallery." Has anybody tried using this? Any success? Any pitfalls I should avoid?

Thanks for you help!!

Hey Tim,

One of my customer's sites that I did major work on this past summer, uses Photo Gallery by 10Web (top right) and the developer was EXCELLENT to work with. Though I still make sure to ALWAYS backup that site before updating this plugin as it has failed on me twice since... and in fairness, the developer was quick to fix this each time.

Hope you find this helpful.

Thank you Trish :)

I'll probably end of testing out both the one you vouched for and the other one (top left) that has far and away the most installs and such.

ttys,
Tim

It looks like I'd have to buy a premium membership in order to have an ecommerce solution to sell my photos. Is that what your customer did over the summer? As in, did they sell their photos?? And did they buy the premium version?

No, my client's business is service based. Offering examples of the work done in the past is the way this plugin is used.

It was me that did major work on this site this past summer, bringing it up to date (what a job THAT was too!). The site was no longer being tended to by another person previously.

The free version is still in use today.

Hi Tim,
Sorry to say I haven't yet tried the WordPress Gallery Plugin you mentioned...I've been using the FooGallery Plugin on my art site, since it was recommended with the theme I use, but lately I've been doing some thinking on changing my whole website setup around, theme and all.

The plugin I'm using seems to work fine, btw, but I've been told by quite a few that they recommend putting my artwork up at the very front of the site as the first thing visitors see...which does make sense since I see most other artists/photographer sites have a gallery/portfolio page showing their images first thing.

So, I may end up changing my theme too, which I might do anyways since it might not have been a good choice for an art site in the first place, lol.

As for plugins that work in selling photography/artwork, I'm still looking into it more...but, I've been thinking of trying out the Woocommerce plugin for selling original artworks and possibly digital downloads after watching Jay's (Magistudios) training on it.

I'm wondering if you've thought of checking into joining print-on-demand sites like Zazzle, Redbubble, Fine Art America or Society Six to name a few that sell prints, posters, etc. of your photography images. It might be another option for you as well to sell your photography without spending a lot on printing them yourself.

Anyways, sorry I'm not much help on your question about the gallery plugin, but thought I'd add my two cents here on what might work for you to try out.

Good luck with your photography niche, I look forward to seeing your work sometime!

Best wishes :) ~Sherry

I tried to leave a comment on your site but it said I was submitting too soon. Weird.

I do like your images. Are they chalk? Or paint? What mediums do you use??

Hi Tim,
Thanks for checking it out! That's so awesome of you and thank you too for the kind words. I've never had that happen for comments before...I'll have to check into that and see what's going on, thanks for letting me know!

As for my images, the ones up in the main sliders are a mix of mediums...the rose is an oil painting, and the other two are done using digital software. The rest of the images on the site range from colored pencil, graphite pencil, oil paint, and lately quite a bit of digital, especially for the book illustrations since it's a little faster to use.

I still have so many I haven't yet uploaded to my site, especially pencil drawings since I can do them anywhere...but, I do prefer oil paints the most. Just to find time to get to it though, lol!

Thanks again for checking it out and letting me know about the comment issue...might be something I'll have to fix in there.

Anyways, I hope the suggestions I had help you out in some way or another...I'd definitely look into which ones offer more of a payment to the photographer or artist, and I believe some also offer affiliate programs to join as well...Zazzle is one I believe that does and I think I noticed a couple others as well.

Let me know when you get yours up and running and I'll check it out too, btw! Just send a PM if you want with your link.

Best wishes :) ~Sherry
