I Have Decided to Be Happy Now
We all have goals that we want to accomplish in life. These are things we strive towards.
I personally have plans which are my blueprints for making amazing things come to reality. More especially things that will help people that I live with in the community.
I have aspirations to visit places I have dreamt of. Beautiful places that I will one day reach.
I dream of big things, I have visions of big real big things. These things will be but are not yet.
You see me here, but I will not remain here because what I envision are big things. I may not reinvent the wheel but I shall surely move to where I want to be, the beautiful dreamland now but reality through my aspiration.
Truly the future is unknown. One can plan for it, prepare for it, hope for it, and envision it, but it never arrives if we do not take action. It only looms in front of us if we lose focus on what we aspire for. That is not what I intend to do. Mine will come.
There is one thing we can be certain of and that is: Change.
Our circumstances change, people change, opportunities change, luck changes, locations change, the economy changes, uncertainty is what we can rely on with an open mind ready to grab any opportunity that falls onto our path.
We often can’t change our circumstances, but we can always control our response to what come our way and it is a sure way to remain happy and on course with our visions.
If our happiness is circumstantial, it is certain to change because circumstances change. Rarely are we where we want to be and if we are, it is only for a passing moment before we want to be somewhere else.
The future will not be different.
I will be as happy in the future as I have purposefully chosen to be happy now.
If one thinks they will be happy only once they move into a new house, or when they quit their job, or when they finish school, or when they launch a new product, or when their newsletter hits a thousand subscribers, or when their finally go on holiday break to their dream place, or when they finally have kids, or when the kids leave the house, they guarantee fleeting happiness.
Living for the next thing doesn’t ensure happiness when you finally get there, it only builds the habit of putting your happiness in circumstances just beyond a certain or given the horizon. When you think you are closer to what you think will make you happy, the horizon is once again further away. It is a rat race.
This is not to say we should have no hopes or ambitions. Rather, if we decide to withhold happiness from ourselves until something external is obtained, we only rob ourselves of potential joy in the moment.
I know that for as much as I want to believe my happiness will permanently increase when I reach the next milestone, it will only be for a short while. Now imagine the wait you had to endure only for the excitement to dwindle just in a moment.
Choose to enjoy the journey.
But one has to continue to live in between the ups and downs. Life has to be enjoyed now if we are to enjoy what we aspire for. It gives us renewed energy to work towards our aspirations. We ought to enjoy the ride that is full of bumps which result in gaining experience.
Like now, all I will have in the future is the current moment. If I do not practice choosing happiness now, I will never be happy even when I have obtained everything I aspire to.
I have goals. I have things I want to accomplish. Things I’m striving towards.
I have aspirations. I have places I want to be. Destinations that I will one day reach.
I’m not there yet, but I am happy now.
