I back up regularly, but after reading, I immediately glanced at my external drive to be sure I had unplugged it afterward.
I recommend 2 external drives: 1 at home/office and one at friends/family members place which you see regularly. Because the worst case scenario could be a fire or burglars and all your work is gone.
I don't know if a cloud solution is 100% reliable.
