Google+ and Authorship do help rankings

I wrote an article yesterday about finding good keywords. This was a deliverable in the bootcamp where we are to write an article on keyword research and link it to our review of Jaaxy. I posted it also to social media as per norm.
Out of curiousity I did a search on Google today to see where this article ranked on some of my keywords I used in the article itself.
I was stunned to see it ranked number 2 for one keyword and on first page for two others. What I found interesting was that the keywords used to rank it 2nd and on page one showed the post on G+ which points to my site from there. Also my little photo shows up in all cases for G+ entries. I know authorship and the little photo is a topic of conversation lately at WA. It seems that they are not always appearing or are disappearing from older posts which seems to be a new Google "feature".

My actual post does show ranked 21 pointing directly to my site for another keyword I used but without the little photo from Google authorship.
The point I want to make is that G+ and authorship do seem to add a lot of power to search rankings.
So following the basics of good keyword research definately pays off and using social media, especially G+ and google authorship are not to be ignored.
I wish everyone well.
