A trackback is simply a notification or an alert that is sent usually from another website. As Kymee (@wtbee2013) mentioned, spammers caught wind of it and started abusing it. You can turn them off in your Settings->Discussion by unchecking the Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
I know someone else will come and explain it better, but it is spam another person trying to use you site for back links.
