Rethinking my site structure

So my site is only 6 weeks old, but I'm already thinking about restructuring the menus. I've currently split it into 3 broad areas:

  1. Baby gadgets
  2. Toddler gadgets
  3. Parent gadgets

However I'm finding that a lot of my content is falling into baby or toddler gadgets, and also worrying that these menu heading will be getting too long in the drop down once I have a few more posts under my belt.

I would love to hear some thoughts on the following idea for menus headings:

  1. Sleep
  2. Feeding
  3. Health and hygiene
  4. Entertainment
  5. Parent zone

I can recategorise my existing posts into these headings quite easily, and my keyword ideas fro future posts will also work well under these headings.

My site is babyandtoddlergadgets.com if that helps you to understand my idea.

One final question: is it ok to use categories as menu headings, or am I better off to create pages of content for each of the menu headings? Does this matter? Hmm...

Hi Caroline,

Your URL says "gadgets" already so, personally, I would go with your choices for the simpler (or basic) labels.

Thanks,
Trish

Thanks Trish. I'm trying not to restrict to only posting about gadgets though as some of my posts are just helpful topics for new parents. Majority of the posts will be about gadgets though. Maybe I just drop the word gadgets and have Baby, Tiddler, Parents?

Yes Caroline, I do believe those labels are best. Otherwise you'll be finding yourself refining your lists far too much.

Hello Caroline, my preference would be to create headings that will resonate with visitors to your site. I like the second batch of headings and would create pages under those. In my opinion by using the word gadget, you are limiting the potential of the site and future posts.

Yes I was thinking that I didn't want to be limited to gadgets, although the majority of posts will be gadgets and reviews, I'm also trying to create value posts which don't fall under the default nation of anything to do with "gadgets"!

As others have said not to have too many headings, I can maybe get rid of the parent zone and just reassign those posts into the other categories?

Too many categories will render poorly on mobile devices, it would be better to keep the Baby/Toddler gadget menus and then create sub-menus of each of those like the other menus you are proposing. And yes, using categories is the way I structure almost all of my sites.

Ok, so maybe I just don't have enough posts yet to make use of sub headings? I agree that lots of headings is hard to read, I might have a play around with it.

Thanks for your input!
