Hi Christina,
Did you look at the addtoany plugin? I was going to use that one.

let me know what you think. It is also a free one.

Hello Chas,

I just checked out AddToAny plugin and it seems a pretty cool one. And it has lots of positive reviews. I might give it a try and I will let you know how I like it.Thank you so much for your recommendation. I really appreciate your help. :)

Have an amazing day,
Cristina

I use social media feather.

Granted it does not float anywhere on the site. I was advised against using floating social media buttons as they obscure the screen on mobile phones.

Lis.

Hello Lis,

Thank you for your recommendation and your advice. I will be careful which social sharing plugin I am going to install. I will test it both on the computer and mobile devices. I would prefer a floating bar with the social media buttons, because they will always be visible as people scroll down and read through the content and they will be something like ''share me, share me''. :)

In my opinion, the social media sharing buttons placed in the side bar or even at the bottom of the blog post have a greater impact than if they are placed at the top of the article. People will always read the content first before deciding to share it or not.

Yes, sharing buttons placed at the top of the article can have a great impact when there are 100's or 1000's shares (of course if the sharing counter is enabled), people will be more likely to read the content, but again, there should be sharing buttons at the bottom of the page as well, because people might not scroll back at the top of the page just to share the blog post, so they need a ''little reminder''.

SumoMe works well on mobile devices, the social media buttons appears floating at the bottom instead on the side of the screen, which is also great.

Wish you a great day,
Cristina :)

Social media buttons are always difficult to gauge.

With Sumo, if the buttons are not obscuring the window on a mobile when it is floating then I would definitely go with that one.

I think I will also take a look at that as well.

Thank you for the tip.

Have a great day.
Lis.

You're welcome Lis! I am going to install it in the coming days and I will let you know how it behaves on my own website.

All the best,
Cristina

Thank you. I hope it works well. Back up your site first before you do anything. Just to be on the safe side.

Lis.

Sure I will, thanks a lot for the reminder. Do you use any backup plugin or you backup your website manually?

Have a great day,
Cristina

Hi Cristina,

I use a plugin that once set automatically backs up my site daily. If I know that I am going to do something that could harm my site I run a manual backup to be on the safe side.

I wrote this blog a while back with details of the plugin and how to set it up. Lis.

Hello Lis,

Thank you for providing me with this training, I really appreciate your help. The problem is that I installed the BackWpUp plugi 3 months ago, followed all the steps from Welshy training and I was keep getting an error.

I should take the time and give it a try again. For some people it works and for some doesn't work fine.

All the best,
Cristina

Hi Cristina,

If you are struggling with that method there are two other methods which may work for you.

BACKING UP TO THE CLOUD

First of all download everything from your site to a folder on your computer as follows:

In the Dashboard click on Tools==> Export to back up your posts, pages and comments.

All your images should already be on your computer as you should have downloaded them before uploading them to your site.

The theme and plugins, however, will not be backed up with this method.

Then follow this video. ------------------------------------------
BACKING UP USING FTP

If that the cloud method does not work try this one. All the best.
Lis.

Hello Lis,

Thank you so much for your help and providing me with this video training. I already use Dropbox and any time I manually back up my website, I upload the files there. But yes, unfortunately I can't back up the theme or the plugins I use, unless I use another plugin that can do this.

My laptop doesn't let me install FileZilla. I tried to install it just before finding WA. There are lots lots of negative reviews about this FTP and lots of people had their computers crashed after installing/using FileZilla.

I don't know much about FTP's, but if you are using Mozilla, there is an add-on called FireFTP, which I heard is good and doesn't require any software installation.

I will give BackWPup another try and I heard UpdraftPlus is also a very good backup plugin.

Thank you again for your help,
Cristina

SumoMe

I was thinking about this plugin, as a friend recommended me, the only little problem with this one is that you can't remove the branding, unless you pay for a Premium version.

I also found lots of negative reviews about this plugin, but also lots of great reviews, so I am not sure. I guess I just have to give this plugin a try and see how behaves on my website.

Thank you for your recommendation.

All the best,
Cristina

Been using it awhile, it has it's pros and cons for sure. But, I'm happy with it for now. If you come across something you feel is better, I would be interested. Please let me know, Cristina. Thanks!

SumoMe has lots of options compared to other free social sharing plugins, so it does a lot for a free plugin and the social media icons looks pretty cool. A premium plugin will most of the times be better than a free one, but I am not going to pay for a plugin yet.

I might do some more research, but SumoMe seems like the one of the best free social sharing plugin out there and it does more than just sharing buttons. I will let you know if I will find a better one, but I will like to give SumoMe a try. :)

Have a great day,
Cristina

Here's a great training that explains this. Hope it helps :)

Hello Jess,

Thank you so much for sharing that video training. It explained a lot.

All the best,
Cristina

And yeah, you can change it. It will still work. The only problem exists when you have great rankings under a particular keyword and then you attempt to change the title of a post and the actual permalink URL.

That can sometimes impact your ranking....which is definitely not worth it if you are getting traffic/sales from a given keyword.

Oh, thanks a lot Kyle. The answer I've been seeking! It kinda stressed me the whole day. I was wondering how changing the URL of a post can affect my ranking if I wasn't even getting traffic on it.

I just saw no logical explanation, unless of course that post is having great ranking and maybe it's on the 1st page in Google. As so many people here on WA were saying that changing the URL can affect my website, I was afraid I might have to rewrite the old posts as new posts.

I want to improve my existing content and also target a good keyword for each of my old posts where I haven't targeted keywords yet. And using a good keyword in the URL, you know it's very important for better rankings.

Thank you again Kyle for the help. It means a lot for me!

Wish you a wonderful weekend,
Cristina

Looks like your question is covered. Isn't it great to have the number one or number two guy answer your question? Only here on WA can you find that kind of dedication from the founders of the site.

Hello Larry,

Yes, my question is answered and I am so happy now. That's right Larry, support like on WA you will never find somewhere else. I really appreciate that Kyle and Carson are always here within the community, helping people and giving their time to answer our questions. The other day, they amazed me with the comments platform.

Hi Christina, good question! I have updated a few, but after watching
the video below, I am just going to write new ones, seems more productive to me, what do you think? Have a great weekend
Chas

Hello Chas,

I also edited a couple of my posts permalinks a while back, I didn't know it can impact my rankings... I am a bit worried because I did this to my WA review URL.

A week ago I added my website to ''Google Webmaster Tools'', as well as ''Google Analytics'' and it doesn't show me any website error or something and the pages are indexed in Google with the new URL's. (you have to give it GWT and GA a while to start gather accurate data)

So I don't know, I also want to make some changes to my existing posts. I can as well update the existing ones and add my targeted keywords and leave the URL the way it is, or copy-paste my content and add it to a new post with my targeted keyword in the URL as well.

So I really don't know what to say Chas, if you really want a specific keyword in the URL, rewriting the posts seems like a better idea. If you have any internal links, make sure you change them as well. For example, if you link an article on your website to the WA review and your WA review have another URL now, make those changes wherever you have internal links within your content.

I read somewhere that there is some kinda way ''to tell Google'' that you changed your URL, but I don't know how this work. I will try to get more informed about this. For the moment, I will leave my posts URL's the way they are.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Cristina

Thank You, Christina, As always, very helpful information. I will have to go thru my pages later and check the links to be sure they work.

Hello Everyone!

How do you backup your websites? I installed the BackWpUp plugin, but it doesn't seem to work so well. Does it work for you?

It is really necessary t

Hello Cristina,

Backwpup is a great plugin to have. The XML export you get from Tools > Export only gives you certain content like posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, and users; it's not a full site backup.

Backwpup gives you a full site backup to include the same content as Tools > Export along with images, files, themes, plugins, database records, and any customizations. So if your site disappears, gets deleted, or gets infected with malware, you can restore the entire site and not just parts of it. And you can run these backups on a schedule. UpdraftPlus is also a good plugin.

I'm not sure how these plugins function on WA hosting though; I don't host here. WA does blocks certain external connections, so if you have any problems, contact WA Support to see what is allowable.

A member here also created a training on Backwpup, so may be it works fine on WA: I have heard that WA keeps backups of your site for you, but I can not comment or how regularly that occurs or how reliable it has been for others. Again, WA Support could give more insight on that. You also may want to ask the community about their experience having their sites restored by WA Support.

Best practice is to always keep your own full backups though. Only you know the best backup schedule for your site, and disaster never warns that it's coming.

Take care

Hello Amathews,

I really appreciate your answer. I did followed this tutorial when I first installed Backwpup and made all the steps within the video, but it just can't seem to work well and I am not the only one here that installed this plugin and got some error. I might try to reinstall it again sometime or try another backup plugin. The hosting here on WA is very good and the websites are backed up everyday.

The only thing that can mess up my website is if I would want to upload a new theme, add a new plugin or something like that, but even so the cases are rare. But yes is good to have a backup as well, because you don't want to lose all your hard work you put in.

Again, thank you for sharing the importance of backing up websites with me. I will probably try to find a better plugin that does this work.

Have a wonderful day,
Cristina

No problem Cristina. You have a wonderful day as well.

If you are still thinking of a back up, go to new plug ins and type in back up and see what else might be available

Hello,

Thank you for the recommendation. I might do that in the next future when I will start adding more and more futures on my website, but right now the manually backup from ''Tools'' - ''Export'' is great.

I copy and paste everything to Microsoft Word. Create 2 folders: text and image. How is your website going?

Hello Peter,

That is also a very good idea. I usually start writing my ideas in Word and then paste them into WordPress. But I do a lot of changes once I am in WordPress until I publish everything.
Anyway I do my back up manually from ''Tools'' - ''Export'' and then save the file in my PC and also upload it to Dropbox anytime I made a significant change.
My website is going well, unfortunately I didn't had too much time to work these days as I am having finals right now and have so much to study for school. But after that I will have 3 months of holiday which is great! I still have so many things to do on my website hehehe. How is yours going, did you wrote any new article?

Hello Peter,

I am looking forward to read your articles in the days coming! I am still having 4 exams and time is short hehehe.
I wish you best luck with your final exam!
Keep it up!

Hi Cristina,
I do not know about the plugin BackWpUp, still a few lessons away from me in bootcamp, but thanks for the info, i will keep that in mind if I have problems myself. Great week to You!

Hello Chas,

I don't think you really need this plugin but if you are going to try it let me know how it works for you. Kyle shows us two ways to backup our website, a very easy way and there is another video training made by a WA member.
I guess this plugin worked better a few years ago, because now many people seem to have problem with it. Also we don't need so many plugins to our websites because is going to make the website load slower.
I do my backup manually from ''Tools'' - ''Export'' and then save the file in my PC and also upload it to Dropbox.

Have an amazing day,

Never use that plugin. I do it the same way you do tools - export. Take care.

Thank you so much for the answer. I was thinking to uninstall it as well because it just doesn't work well. Better do the quick way from ''Tools'' - ''Export'' anytime I make a significant change.

Have an awesome week,
