You have joined your affiliate programs, which gives you access to affiliate programs and your ability to earn revenue. If someone clicks on your affiliate link it sets a ‘cookie’ in their browser, which essentially tracks any sales generated through your affiliate links back to you…at which point you earn a commission.
Tasks for this Lesson:
- Learning how to insert your affiliate links
- Adding your Affiliate Disclosure page
- Adding an in-page disclaimer, and the best approach to that
- Add an affiliate link to at least one of your pages
But how do you add an affiliate link to your website, and what are the proper practices for doing this? That is what we are going to be covering in this lesson here.
Successfully inserting your affiliate links is pretty straightforward, but crucial. These unique URLs are essential for directing visitors to the products or services you promote and for earning commissions. Here’s how to do it effectively:
- Find Your Affiliate Link: Start by logging into your affiliate account. Here, you’ll find your unique affiliate links associated with the products or services you’re promoting. Copy the link you intend to use.
Here is an example link that I created:
- Use Anchor Text for Link Insertion: The next step is to embed your affiliate link into your content. A common method is using anchor text, where you link relevant text in your content to the affiliate product. This makes the link accessible to your readers without disrupting the flow of your article or post.
- Test the Link: After inserting the link, it’s important to test it. This is where many people mess up, as it is possible you don’t insert your affiliate links properly. Hover over the link and click on it to ensure it directs correctly to the intended product or service page. If there’s an issue, double-check that you copied and pasted the link correctly as that tends to be the most common issue.
Familiarize yourself with this process, as it’s a fundamental skill in affiliate marketing. With practice, it becomes more intuitive. Properly embedding affiliate links lays the groundwork for successful marketing and is a precursor to other important aspects, such as including affiliate disclaimers, which is the next step in ethical affiliate marketing.
Adding an Affiliate Disclosure Page to Your Website
Creating a transparent and effective affiliate disclosure page is a key aspect of ethical affiliate marketing. This indicates to your audience that you are in fact an affiliate of products that are promoted in your website, and potentially receiving compensation for that.
Here’s a simplified approach to crafting this page, with a recommendation to use the Hubs platform and its Affiliate Disclaimer page template.
Within your Hub, you are going to see an “Affiliate Disclosure” under your writing task.
Upon clicking this, it is going to take you to a pre-created template, which covers the basis for your Affiliate Disclaimer. This is a standard document, and you don’t need to create a unique one for your website. We have created a template for you to help streamline this process, and speed up the creation of your site.
Once you review the content, you simply want to “Publish” that document to your website.
Here is a walk-through of the steps of setting up your Affiliate Disclosure:
1. Create a Dedicated Disclosure Page. Set up a separate page on your website specifically for your affiliate disclaimer. This page should clearly explain your affiliations and the nature of the products or services you promote. It's not just about legal compliance; a well-crafted disclaimer strengthens trust with your audience by being open about your affiliate relationships.
2. Link to Your Disclaimer Page. Ensure that the link to your affiliate disclaimer page is prominently displayed and easily accessible from anywhere on your site. Common locations for this link include the footer, the main menu, or a sidebar on your blog. Visibility is key to demonstrating transparency to your readers.
3. Use Clear and Concise Language. Your disclaimer should be straightforward, stating that you may earn a commission for purchases made through your affiliate links at no additional cost to the reader. Clarity is crucial to avoid any misunderstandings.
OK, now that you have this in place, we are going to be focusing on the in-page aspect of affiliate disclaimers, which is a requirement based on FTC regulations.
The In-Page Disclaimer (and how to add it)
In addition to having a standalone affiliate disclaimer page, integrating in-page disclaimers is an important step for transparency in your content, and is actually a requirement laid out by the FTC. Here’s how to implement this effectively:
1. Strategic Placement: Place your in-page disclaimer near the beginning of your content. The key is to ensure visibility without requiring the reader to scroll down. This ensures that readers are immediately aware of the affiliate links in the content.
2. Clarity and Conciseness: Your disclaimer should be brief but clear, and there are different ways that you can approach the content. A simple statement like this could work:
This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
This informs readers about the nature of the links without overwhelming them with information. You can get crafty and fun with these though, as long as you retain the messaging.
Here's a little transparency: Our website contains affiliate links. This means if you click and make a purchase, we may receive a small commission. Don't worry, there's no extra cost to you. It's a simple way you can support our mission to bring you quality content."
And you can even make them “niche” specific, here is a fun example that is relevant to my basketball niche.
Guess what? When you click and buy through our links, you're doing more than improving your business. You're supporting us in a way that doesn't cost you extra but helps us keep bringing you the best tips and strategies. It's a business win for both of us!"
3. Distinctive Design: Make your disclaimer stand out by using a different font color, a bordered box, or a shaded background. The aim is to make it noticeable yet integrated with the rest of your content, ensuring it doesn’t disrupt the reading experience.
By incorporating both a dedicated disclaimer page and in-page disclaimers, you enhance the transparency and trustworthiness of your affiliate marketing efforts, and this can actually boost conversions. This dual approach is a strong practice in maintaining authenticity with your audience, and keep in tune with the latest policies and legislation around affiliate marketing…which is something that we should always aim for!
Transparency and Trust in Affiliate Marketing is Key.
Understanding the role of affiliate links and the importance of proper disclaimers is crucial to success in your affiliate marketing business. Having this baseline of knowledge is going to ensure your comply to the FTC's guidelines as well. So you are not only creating trust, you are operating as an ethical, and respected affiliate marketer!
The thing is, your audience values honesty, and clear disclosure of affiliate links helps to reinforce this trust. So this can have a positive bearing your brand, and your overall conversions.
So while affiliate marketing offers significant earning potential, prioritizing transparency and trustworthiness is essential. Being a trustworthy marketer is key to long-term success in this business, and you are now well situated to do that. :)
