Persevering When Everything Inside You Says "Quit"

My Title is not entirely accurate. Not everything inside you is going to say "quit". There is that still small voice that will tell you that if you keep going something amazing is going to happen. You must listen to it! How many decide to give up when they are so close to success? Many more than you might imagine.

It is that time just before the big breakthrough that is almost always the hardest. You have what seems to be the worst day of your life and you realize it is all falling apart. You are ready to call it quits, pick up your toys, go home and bury your head under the covers.

I know this feeling well. I think we all have experienced something like this at least a few times in our lives.

Relating to our current businesses....Your site is resisting all your attempts to make it just the way you want....Or you are just not getting traffic...Whatever it may be after all you have done, it is not the time to let it go. It is the time when you are most frustrated and discouraged and even scared that you need to take a breath, realize you know far more than you did a few weeks ago, jump in and recommit yourself to making the changes that will create a success. Even though you may not feel it is possible, with the determination you can call up from deep within, you can make that extra effort and break through.

My most devistating time of my life was when the housing market crashed. I was a builder at the time and suffered a huge financial setback. I owned a number of houses and lots. Along with most other builders and land developers most of us lost everything. There were suicides, some developers went to jail, marriages failed and so on. My fiance broke up with me and I was just alone and devistated and broke.

I was disheartened by the experience and it felt like my life was over, but I knew I had it in me to put it back together again. I took whatever jobs I could get. I worked for a caterer on weekends, I did handyman jobs, and so on and rebuilt my business one job at a time. Every month the handyman jobs started to turn into construction jobs. I was able to hire a helper and then it built and built and I eventually had a full crew again doing remodeling.

After a while I was able to buy a house, rehab it and sell it. Then I was able to buy two. I was able to pick up a couple of rental properties and life got pretty good again.

I often think about the two guys who lost everything and commited suicide. If they had just gone on and tried they could have rebuilt their lives.

The hardest thing for me was learning humility. I had been well off and had crews of people working for me. Suddenly, I was serving food for a caterer. I was out there with my hammer and saw and doing the daily work of carpentry and construction. I broke my wrist and still had to work. I had to learn humility or I never could have done it.

What someone told me was that I was doing service for others and that was something I could be proud about. I took that to heart and decided I would learn to enjoy doing service.

I have to say that what i thought was the biggest failure of my life was the best thing that ever happened to me It taught a lot about what is important. It certainly taught me that I am resilient. I had had the chance to make a choice...I would either become bitter or I would pick myself up and keep on with life.

So here we are today in Wealthy Affiliate having a great time and loving it. I know that my persistence pays off for me every day and it is probably my best asset.....except for Christy that is.

I am very impressed with the story of your life, all the difficulties you went through, that is the life I guess, sometimes we have to get through of all of that, and then we become stronger if when can face it.
You seem to be that strong, and positive person.
Be well, and I am sure you will win.

Thank you. We cannot let that still small voice be drowned out by the unfamiliar work required.

Hi Sheila. Yes, it is good to listen carefully, isn't it? That inner knowing is so important

Thank you for this post; it is very inspiring.

I have a hard time with humility as well. I had a hard time accepting I was an alcoholic because my outside world looked OK to me. Granted, I was miserable, but I used my "successes" as a way to deflect when people close to me mentioned my drinking.

I've also worked odd jobs that are below an MBA. Some of those jobs were actually fun looking back though. Humility is a great lesson to learn!

Thanks Ernest, seems like the most painful lessons are the best ones sometimes. Great share.
