That critical Voice!
This was one of Sam's Horn's tips today in the Writewell MindFest
During her presentations she uses a great many examples and she explained how Sting had had writers block for 8 years, he had not been able to write words or a song. Terrible for such a talented man. So he decides he needs to go back to the area he was bought up and found himself in the ship yards of his youth. He spent days talking to sailors, workers and just generally hanging out. When he returned he had so many ideas for songs and projects that his fingers could not move fast enough to write them down.
Sam suggests that we can lose that common touch, spent too much time in our heads and not in the head of our audience. Write for the people that cannot write. What do you want them to know? How useful is what I am saying to my audience? Why do I want this information in my writing? Will my writing help people?
Sam suggests that we are often so critical of ourselves that we lose our creative voice. That our critical voice does not allow us to have the clarity to move forward. She says keep writing and not to correct your work as you go, just write. Draft then craft.
I love this thinking, I know that I have been very hung up about my grammar and have always felt inferior in my writing because of that but hearing Sam's words has really made me realise that the creativity is paramount and that keeping the writing flowing is more important to keep moving forward. I can craft it later.
Good luck.
Best wishes,
Jackie
