Domain Confusion

Hi all,

So, I'm working my way through the trainings (they are awesome!)

I have gone to Go Daddy and purchased some websites (I know about Site Rubix, and have set up one site on there, but figured I should own the domains I'm serious about for the long haul).

Along with purchasing the domain, there are about 9 million other options for privacy, certification, yada, yada, yada ...

What features do you feel are NECESSARY and what features do you recommend that we should pass on? The cost adds up quickly .... but I also don't want to pass up on some sales just because a buyer is not convinced that my site is legit.

Thanks for your input. I wish you a SUCCESSFUL, HAPPY and HEALTHY new year!

Sorry, didn't mean to comment and leave you all hanging, it looks like Rich got you sorted though.
Thanks @Rich

What, are you busy or something? :-) Thanks Labman!

Actually I'm a bit under the weather. Flu smacked me upside the head. Down and out for about 3 days straight.

Hope u are better soon. We had that at our house too just before Christmas. :-(

Hey, WVLadyRebel, forgot to tell you about another really great training -
What worked for me was to review Welshy's training on FTP /DNS (sorry, can't think of the name but type it into the forum area)

Then:
Golden Lady's blog, "Changing DNS Settings in GoDaddy.com" - this gives you step by step directions to get your Go Daddy purchased websites to talk to the WA hosting, so that they'll actually go live. (and you don't have to pay Go Daddy to host).

Hope it helps. :)

That is just what I needed, thank you so much bike chick! It really helps me out! Sharing is so much fun here! Have a good evening ! If you need anything, please let me know, I will gladly help!

Rich, I will do that. Thank you for the heads up! You seem to be the knight in shining armor to the damsels in distress here at WA! Thank you very much, Sir Knight!

I am very confused about all the domain info. Wish there was a do's and don'ts tutorial for this issue. I also have domains I purchased at Go Daddy and i spent a bundle and I do not know what to do. They are also hosting the sites and I was told that wasn't good so I am going in circles.

I hope you figure out what you are doing, and maybe, if I get lucky, I can find out what to do with my websites. I want to use them and I cannot find the information I need in the lessons. I am sure it is here, but where?

Great blog though. Good Luck in 2013!

Hey Debbie. I think the lack of info. is simply down to most people purchasing just their domain name and then hosting here at WAU. There are so many domain registrars and hosting services that it's not possible to cater for all the permutations. In simple terms, if you're a premium member, buy your domains from Namecheap, 1&1, GoDaddy, et al without any extras, point them to your included hosting here at WAU and off you go. If you type the word "domain" into the search bar here at WAU you'll see instructions for each of the ones I've named above. Rich.

I got a site to go live yesterday with an ftp / dns tutorial by Welshy. He saved my bacon! Now I need to give it some awesome content. :-)

Thanks for clarifying Rich! :)

Ahhh, I see. Who do you mean by "3rd party" .... like an ad agency or your neighbor .... ? Offshore, that's interesting. I suppose there are certain US states that are better too? (I'm thinking about Pot Pie's discussion on Nexus laws from a couple of weeks ago specifically, but maybe some states have better privacy? Or are they all the same b/c it's cyberspace?)

Exactly. If you affiliate for example, that's traceable. PayPal, Google + etc, etc. There are services where you can pay for everything to be registered under an umbrella company but you also run the risk of losing control of a site that has never technically been yours. A lot of people use domain privacy because their employers forbid them from holding second jobs or competing in the same arena. It deflects casual searchers not those on a mission. Rich.

Thanks Rich. So, when you purchase a domain, could you just use your business name, and leave your personal name off? (but then obviously your business will be registered where you do business, and if someone wanted to they could dig it up I suppose!)

Exactly. I have a set that are registered offshore. However, I'm pretty sure that if someone really wanted to find out who was behind them it wouldn't take them that much effort. There are just too many "clues" littering cyberspace for those who really want to find out unless you use a third-party to register "everything" in conjunction with the site. Rich.

Even privacy? I don't really want my name and address out there, can that be found if you don't purchase the privacy protection?

Also, don't you need certification so people don't pass your site by?

Wow, I think I just over paid, I thought I was doing well by only buying those features. :(

Privacy is something of a myth in regard to domains. It's usually possible to work out who the private individuals who own domains are whether or not they're officially listed. Also, some people feel that search engines look askance at domains with "hidden" owners. Rich.

Hi Labman. None? Please explain. THANKS! :)

As Craig said, "None". Ignore all the add-ons. They're all unnecessary! Rich.

None.
