Amazon Destroying Rare Books for AI

I ran across an article the other day that left me completely in shock. I am wondering if anyone else saw this article? In the article, it described that Amazon has a facility in Las Vegas where workers are dismantling and destroying rare books to feed to AI. The article said that Amazon and other AI companies have so much money that they are outbidding libraries and private collectors for very rare books. Once they acquire them, they cut the spines off the rare books and feed the individual pages into a machine for AI. These books are completely ruined once they have been cut up.
I, and my family, are book people. We have hundreds of books and treasure them. We have some very old classics and many out of print books. We would never put a price on them. Personally, I find this abhorrent. Many of these books will be gone forever! Are we so callous that we sacrifice these treasures for AI? How far are they going to go? What do you think of this? Which side are you on and why?
