It's funny, but I have read some stuff on this and it seems that if the content is worth the trip many will stay and interact/take action no matter what the site looks like...
I have to agree though that you need to present your best self to the site visitor, and having a decent website design is important...Especially if new to the niche...

You're right Dave. The most important aspects of website design is ease of navigation. But the overall look of your site shouldn't look like a dump :)
